Alternative Tele/ Wide Converter for D1x...

GH,

Excellent color, sharp, well organize btw sky & building. Do you
have full size version?
Don't worry, the full size version is just at the excellent sharpness.
Some how I see a bit, Purple Fringing (Chromatic Aberrations);
defintely not come from D1x CCD, well who care, as long as the
photo show good quality.
The 28mm/1.4 sometimes has noticable CA under strong sun light. For perfection, some correction in PS is required.
You seems do a lot of marco photo, from you web site?
I do many night shots... :D
By the way, what are your career, don't tell me photographer!
Yes, I define myself as photograher, but I don't intend to sale my pictures for money (at least upto this moment, so I would not be a pro), I do like to display and share my photos... maybe I intend to set myself to become an artist (one day?)

I may sit in a park or be anywhere for taking photos, I would help people (particularly pretty girls... :D) to take photos for free.
I am a system (IT) person with a bit finanical mind, like
photography, but don't like to use photography to make living. Too
much hard work, too litte $$$. I only feel this is a gift of art,
for relax.
It is a nice habbit... I love it very much. I don't intend to use photography to make money, because that would change my own photography style to meet client's tastes. I like to shot in my own, no matter you like it or not.
Since knowing technology is the key the future career right!
Technologies is very important in many aspects, but it should be advanced with some others in balance. I intend to keep both my left and right brains in balance, well, equally good or equally bad who knows? :D

For the 28mm/1.4 + WCON, there is nothing change on the meter's measure, it is always at EV 0... :D

Well this seems nice for my configuration, not sure if these extension lens would also work with other lenses.

GH
Which converter was this? TCON or WCON? Do they both behave the
same?

Rick
Take off the extension lens, the meter reports +0.3EV...
wait...wait.... no... it drops back to EV 0 again... and back to
+0.3EV and back to EV 0 again... so... is this a good news?

GH
Cool! I can't wait to see if this really does have the minimal
impact that you imply. It sure looks like a simply approach to get
that little extra you need sometimes on both ends (wideangle/tele)
without breaking the bank.

Keep us posted!

Rick
Yes, the TCON and WCON are with thread of 62mm at the camera side,
I use stepdown rings 77-62 and 72-62mm, and I even have an UV
between them... :D

In my situation, they work very well and I don't find noticeable
vignetting or loss of light at wide open. For exact figure, I would
detail check the shutter speed vs aperture and post again later....

One point for sure is that the AF is just still working wonderful
well... make them possible as real prime extension not only just an
adaptor.

GH
Just curious, but I"m assuming you used a stepdown ring to attach
the WCON and TCON to the lenses you mentioned? My specs show that
the filter size for the 85/1.4 is 77mm and for the 28/1.4 is 72mm.
Since the WCON and TCON both have a rear thread size of 62mm, some
sort of adapter is needed.

Doesn't this adapter reduce the effective opening of the lens such
that it will reduce the amount of light reaching the prime lens?
If so, by how much?

Just curious as I've been in a pinch before and had to use step
down rings with ND filters and I could notice the effect of loosing
light with just the step down ring.

Just curious though as to how this all works. This is an
interesting concept for those of us that can't pop for the $1300+
for a 18mm or 14mm prime, but can pop the $500 on a 20mm (or an
18-35) and put a WCON on it. Photography is about finding creative
ways to use our tools to paint with light. Thanks for point this
one out.

Rick
I just sold my old dcam Sony F707 and am wondering what to do with
my extension lens - tele, wide and macro.

So why don't give a try with the extension lens connected to my
primes? Here is an quick interesting sample taken by a 1.4x
teleconverter connected to my 85/1.4. No vignetting when wide open
at f1.4, no loss of light, AF is still working fine. The best
result was achieved at f5.6 for this test.

Check this - the original sample is in NEF, it is even sharper than
this JPEG version.

I am going to do some more intensive test to see how this tele and
wide converters work with my primes on D1x.

Wide angle adapter, does not reduce light, only tele adapter reduce incoming light.

If need to find a tele adapter that not reduce light, this adapter must be very big & wide open for light incoming. There are no camera & lens company make them.

Sorry to speak something stright, you seem to be a lonely man, ever I saw you have a boy. Maybe not.

Well happy shoting.

I may just can not wait ND, and get a S2 pro, since it is time again take vacation, and travel with my wife. I think S2 pro should be a lot cheaper compare with S1 pro first new out. But the RAW format is very big size 20MB, maybe I want wrong. But I like to shot RAW, becuase I enjoy editing RAW photo to become prefect, also no JPG compression. But I don't think Fuji has compressed RAW, where D1x/h or D100 should had.

GH,

Cool! Thanks. I may have to get a set of these just to play around with. Almost gives one the impression you could hang this 0.8x WA converter on the front of a D1/h/x/00 and overcome some of the 1.5x cropping effect.

No, it would not be perfect, but it might give back some of WA ability to those that really want it without having to shell out megabucks on a ultra WA lens.

Thanks again,

Rick

Wide angle adapter, does not reduce light, only tele adapter reduce

Not sure, but the problem is the prime is at 72mm, the extension len is 62mm, that probably causes some level of loss of light.
If need to find a tele adapter that not reduce light, this adapter
must be very big & wide open for light incoming. There are no

The TCON-14B is a great len that is BIG and actually it causes almost no loss of light... :D

For my case, the addition of a WCON does give more nice wide shots, the cost is $180 plus 2-fstops quality which means I no longer to shoot in f1.4 - f3.5 which are not up to the quality requirement.

However, it would be a real excellent wide combo for outdoor scenes shots under nice sun shine.

HUH?

Why would you think that GH is lonely? No insult James, but where the heck did that come from?

GH - Thanks for the update on the WCON.

I never have any Canon Lens, so no plan to buy any of it. 1D is only 4MP. I don't think Canon quality is better than Nikon. But for high end, maybe the same, since I play Nikon for many years, so never thinking change to Canon. Only lately change to Contax N series, becuase the higher resolution Ziess Lens. Also Contax N can use Contax 645 lens too. I am also think going into 645 range photo shoting in film. Becuase I scan my wedding 120 film, the color & resolution is so nice, also noise free.
