***Mini-Challenge #184 - Travel*** RESULTS

Congratulations everyone, some beautiful photos from around the world.
And thank you for the special mention of my Babinda Boulders (Cairns) photo

Well, as you can see below, none looks like final products. Fiirst is "better" exposed, but note that I exposed second for sunrays, not landscape. I didn't want them blown. Recovery of shadows is much easier than of highlights.

Pretty crappy shooting on both no?

Ok, starting with first, much easier. A long horizontal crop to get rid of asphalt and of the truck on right.

A little black point control and curves to highlight colors and some local burning of asphalt and sky. About that.

Second: no crop here but, well, lots of local adjustments. I use Capture NX, which has NIK control point tools. I read it's available for CS3 as well. You locate a point at some spot and you can change everything there: contrast, luminosity, colors, etc. There's also a brush which may be used together with curves, so I can highlight a piece of image, etc. Not very easy to explain in words, but sure the effect is dramatic. Most would have discarded the second image, or not think of even shooting it. I'm so used to local adjustment with Capture NX that I never discard any images. Even something that looks horrible may turn into an interesting image, even a pretty good one.

Congrats to Bomobob first 1st place and to all other top 5 and HMs.
There were so many excellent photos that it must have been difficult
to chose only 5. Glad I didn't have to do it :) Great job Renato and
thanks for top pic consideration.

Well, I had a very hard time with your pic ... Such a great scene, very well-shot/finished. I know you'd never crop it and get rid of boats on right, but thing of it, it may work. But just great as is, I must confess that the top 5 could be in any order. And I did change them many times.

Well done to all the winners and HMs and congratulations to Renato
for running this so professionally and spending time commenting about
each and every one of the extended list of HMs and winners. Thanx
also for picking one of mine.

You're shot, as I posted, is a perfect night shot, and very well-composed as well. It just missed being among the top ones for some lack of impact, a great issue for me, that thing that comes before you think about an image. Anyway, good job!

for a wonderful winning picture !

Thanks rhlpertrus for a great topic and for being able to go around
the world without leaving my chair. :)
and for picking one of mine for HM.
Sue Anne, I think your image is just too good to be left as you did, not much PP. I'd crop most of the upfront water, and use curves to highlight those wonderful blue hues you have on the glacier, not much, just enough to make it pop. It's a gem shot and you should consider its potentiality.

Congrats to the winner. Thanks for the HM and congrats to the other
HM winners.
I truly enjoyed this contest. There were so many beautiful pictures
from around the world. As you said, many good enough for National
Geography.

Teri, how about a crop just below the roofs of the buildings below, to make top part really pop? My suggestion, the image has already a lot of impact, would be even more interesting IMO.

bomobob for your win..your picture is wonderful - a well deserved win
in a challenge that must have been very difficult to judge!
Congrats to all the other winners and HMs too...and thanks Renato for
giving my Florence pic an HM.
When I edited the picture alignment I deleted the original picture
from flickr which I now realize I should have kept...sorry!
Renato - you did a wonderful job running the challenge and commenting
  • Thanks!

Oh, so you realized it was tilted during the challenge? You should have told me. Well, you deserve to submit it to a later challenge, it's such a lovely image!

I am using Capture One 4 for my raw conversion. It allows some HD work during the conversion, but nothing local like you have done. I'll have to look into Capture NX.
Looks like a powerful package.

I can get some local effects using PS Elements 6.0 after I convert from Raw, but it is not easy.

... congrats to all other HMs and to all winners. Great photo bomobob.

I took your advice and tried to crop it but somehow it didn't look balanced or something was missing. I didn't like it at all. Maybe it didn't crop it at the right place, something looked wrong. Anyway, this was one of the most interesting topics, I truly enjoyed looking at most unique places, I know for sure, I'll never have a chance to visit.
Thanks for all your efforts and personal touch to all the winners and HMs.

Renato:

You do have magic in your fingers, I must say.

The second image turned out gorgeous from one that I would have deleted even in the camera.

Appreciate very much your tips.

Capture NX opens a Nikon Raw file including camera settings. I use "dull" settings: low contrast and low saturation, and Adobe RGB, which has a wider color gamut.

I find it easier to start from there in PPing. So, my ooc shots look horrible by any standards, but I've got used to seeing that and knowing that later I'd be able to correct them as I want. And, as I already mentioned, it's much easier to correct an underexposed, lower contrast image than one with clipped highlights and a wide histogram.

Finally: here's the link to the soft company which makes the local adjust software included with CNX, it's called Nik Software and they have a CS3 plug-in called Viveza inlcuding the U-point tech I use a lot.
