I wouldn't recommend the Samsung 245BW for photo editing.

You can check the reviews on 24" LCD from this website....I would go with the Lacie 324.

The 245BW uses a TN panel which you'll find is not suggested for image editing though if you don't do much editing.... go for it.

One of the big knocks against the less expensive TN panel LCD monitors has been that they only process a 6 bit colour image and then interpolate it to pseudo 8bit. This typically provides a lower quality colour image. However, it looks like some of the newer TN paneled monitors may be using 8bit colour image processing so look for that.

Generally for image editing you want to find an LCD monitor that uses one of these panel types shown herein order of preference:

IPS (newer variants are S-IPS, AS-IPS, H-IPS, etc)
PVA (newer variants are S-PVA)
MVA (newer variants are A-MVA, P-MVA, S-MVA, etc)
TN

The Lacie 324 mentionned here uses a S-PVA panel (LTM240CS). Other monitors using the same panel are shown here:

Alternatively, a lot of people here would endorse one of the NEC monitors. For about the same price of the Lacie and with perhaps better specs (onboard LUT is one) consider the NEC LCD2490WUXi. It uses an IPS panel (LM240WU2).

I would suggest you look for an LCD monitor that uses a S-IPS panel. I bought my first S-IPS monitor last month and the quality of the display is astounding compared to other panel technologies that I have used.

I bought a Hazro 24" - this a Japanese manufacturer who is just starting to move into computer monitors. I don't think they are distributing in America at this point in time.

I don't doubt that the Lacie & NEC units are excellent, but are they worth almost twice the price of the Dell 2408WFP?

(Link to 1 day sale price of $599, May 13 only!)

Specs seem decent to me, if not quite on the same level of the $1000+ monitors. Would you avoid it for any specific reason?

Should we assume that $500 Is your working budget? and if so, a monitor that
sells for double that--the Lacie is out of bounds? Some definition of what you
can spend would help others help you.

My point made another way--otherwise it is like asking.."should I buy a Miata or a Solstice"...and hearing that a Porsche is better than either..and can be avoided
if poster says I have a Miata budget

Indeed, however the OP's first choice was a TN panel. The Dell is S-PVA, gets pretty good reviews on the andandtech site, and is only marginally more expensive than his budget. (It's nice spending other people's money, isn't it? :-))

So I'm wondering if anyone here has personal experience with it, or has read the reviews with a more discriminating eye than myself. I might just pop for one myself if one of the experts here says, "Yeah, that looks like a pretty good decent monitor to me.".

I got my first about 2 weeks ago. I got my second just yesterday.

WOW ! I couldn't be more pleased. I honestly didn't think digital photos could look this good on an LCD. Really really nice.

I am also about ready to buy a 2408 and wondered if the 2407 is
essentially the same in performance --both have been well reviewed.
Dell has 2407s available as refurbished units--which would be right on target
for the OP

I am thinking I'll go with the Dell 2408.... It is right around my budget (500) and the reviews are quite good at this point...

also, today it is $75 off...

Do yourself a favor - save some money and get Apple Cinema 23".

I've been thru HP's, Samsung, Dell, etc and couldn't find any better than ACD 23" for photo editing work (priice range up to $900).

for the price around $599 I doubt there is anything better. I've had one on my desk at the ofice now for a few weeks and very impressed. You have to be careful with the color management built into Vista because I noticed after installing the monitor driver from the supplied CD colors appeared different within various applications. Rather than get all goofy about it I simply deleted the default "profile" in Vista and whoola, NO NEED for calibration. Colors are beautiful, simply fantastic.

I have the version A00 Made in Mexico.

So you guys do not have the problem with left side is brighter than the right and red tinge on the corner of the screen? There a lot of discussion about those in dell forum.

Had my Dell 24" for nearly 3 years now and still love it. It's always a pleasure to come home and use my PC on that monitor after using others. The colours are beautiful, extremely sharp and photos look stunning.

The killer app is the ability to turn the monitor sideways for those portrait photos in CS3.

Add the fact it has a compact flash card slot, so I can plug my camera card into the monitor and 4 USB ports as well and you have a great device.

I've had it nearly three years and the only problem was last week when it just died as it switched on. Fortunately, I payed the extra €15 for a three year replacement policy and the next day a brand new one arrived, just as good as my old one (same model, not the newer ones out now)

I can only imagine that the new versions which have better specs are even better than the one I have.

I would also recommend the Dell 2408. It has great reviews for image quality and is relatively cheap. If you want to spend big $, than go for Eizo. I've had the Dell 2405 for several years and have been very happy using it for photo editing.

I was considering the Dell 2408 and the DoubleSight DS-263N. From what I have read the doublesight is an IPS panel and will be better suited for photo editing and calibrates well
