How about one of these bearing the Pentax badge? Perhaps at least an f/2.0 version?

Now that would be a lens to drool over. Canon and Nikon are doing it, but I guess they have the market for it with sports shooters and the like with $7k DS and $4k D3 bodies. I Imagine such a lens would have to generate a price upwards of $4K so likely there would be a pretty limited market for it in the K-mount.

I've seen some shots from the Canon f/1.8 and they are pretty awesome. Can only wonder what an SMC version would look like. Oh well, keep dreaming I guess.

No, Pentax won't build such lens, at least in next 5 years. They are not crazy :)

They have tasks with much more priority, than doing lens with no market at all (for Pentax mount)
1) K-One-Digital
2) FX/FF/35mm format camera

3) 60-250/4, 55/1.4, 30/1.4, Lim 15, something supertelephoto like 100-400 zoom or 400 prime.
4) High FPS upgrade for K20D
5) ring flash

6) again it will be more prioritical to build 11-16/2.8 and 70-200/2.8, than 200/1.8

Probably unlikely. Much more likely to get a DA*200 macro or a DFA200 macro IMO. Canon have the resources and sales to have multiple lenses at the same focal length with different speeds.

I have read that Pentax will start to focus on some more wide aperture primes (ie DA*55 and DA*30 for a start) as another line of primes to complement the limiteds that are a tad slow for some people. I'd also expect a DA*400 to replace the FA*600. And the other most likely lens is a DA*11-16.

A 135mm 1.8 would be more sensible, and a great deal smaller and not quite as ridiculously expensive.

I'd be interested.

Interested in 135/1.8 ?
Me too. It would replace my Jupiter 37A :-)

If Pentax did make a 200 f/1.8, it would be just as expensive as the Canon and Nikon versions, if not more.

Although the low light ability of a 200 f1.8 or f2 is one aspect of such a lens, the shallow DOF effect is what adds something special to produced images as there are enough f1.8 and faster lenses out there.

So if someone's going to shell out for a 200 f1.8 or a f2, they can easily go with Nikon or Canon, get in-lens stabilisation and a FF body too. On a crop-only platform, there would always be a lot to be desired when using such a lens.

Looks attractive, but you'll need a front lens diameter of some 110 mm and so a massive weight.

What to use it for..safari in twilight ? Distant portraits at a dim-light party ?

Hardly any dof at full opening, and probably not the greatest optical quality there, so where to use it for if 2.8 (Tamron, Sigma) is not enough ?

While the DOF is going to be paper thin, I disagree that it wouldn't be good optically. I got to play with a Canon EF 200mm f1.8L a long time ago, and the lens was only a tiny bit better stopped down than it was wide open. Wide open or stopped down, it was just stunning.

IIRC, that lens also has the highest rating of any lens over at Photodo.

I'm continually amazed by people thinking this. K1D maybe but FF should be right at the bottom of their priorities. Who's going to buy a FF Pentax camera? Surely the only people for whom that would be a viable buy would be someone who has legacy lenses.

They need to get a decent selection of accessories and lenses going, including FF lenses. Availability of old FA and manual lenses is not going to convince the masses.

I know I do.

Just find an older Nikon 200 f2 ais and hack of the meter coupling rim and it (should) fit on a Pentax dslr...when i get the money and find one ratty enough to do it to....SHHHHH do not tell anyone, they are pricey enough as it is, luckily all the Nikon buyers want the new VR one ...should be great for concerts in larger stadiums, and I bet will play nice with the 1.7x afa.

Edit...disclaimer, do this at your own risk.

Most Pentax DLSR users I've ever spoken to, are keeping their favorite A/F/FA lenses in expectance of 'the K2D'. Most of them will buy it if they can afford it, and there are millions of people like them.

Will existing Pentax users be enough to make the investment in developing such a camera worth it? I think they would have to give a compelling enough package to woo users of other brands. Availability of old lenses on eBay isn't going to cut it.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see Pentax succeed at becoming a more prominent player in the market, but simply dropping a full frame body body on the market, no matter how good it is, is not going to do them a any good.

'the K2D' could of course be a professional crop body, like the Nikon D3 or Canon 1Dmk3. That would be a different story. If they can pull that off and sell a body like that successfully, there will be an argument for a FF Pentax body.

But still, they need a bigger variety of Pentax branded lenses and they need to get the likes of Sigma to make all their models available on the Pentax mount.
