Nikon FF D700 (possible leak - looks real)

Canon will once again realize they under spec'ed the 5D2, and will delay it to 2009. :-)

Matt,

Finally a voice of reason, that is great input from someone who uses both systems! And I hope you are right for everyone's sake. If the 5D II follows in the 5D tradition and Canon makes a better camera which is competitive with Nikon and Sony FF models then everyone wins really. And the FF market share/price war continues;)
Hey, I'm a Nikon shooter here. I just thought I'd help bridge the
"gap" between fanboys with the common ground of camera nerdiness, and
say that I'm pretty confident the 5D mk2 will MORE than give
whatever NIkon has coming a run for it's money.

Canon has always come out with a KILLER camera at a LOWER price point
that delivers where it counts- equal or superior image quality.

If the STUNNING 5D sensor is what, 4 years old? (by design) ...Just
imagine what they're cooking up NOW!

The only reason I prefer Nikon is because I started with Nikon and my
brain is hard-wired to love the controls. I've shot with Canon gear
a LOT, possibly more than some of you, having handled and sampled
everything from the D60 to the 1Ds mk2 and 1D mk3. I love Canon as
much as I love Nikon, I just HAPPEN to be a Nikon shooter.

Alright well, take care fellow camera geeks! Cheers to stiff
competition!

Competition is good. Without the D3, we may see a 1DMKIV that is
1.3x crop. Instead, we will probably see a Canon 1D that finally
adopts the full frame format.
Another moronic post.

Sorry? You need to update your signature

"Respond to civility with rudeness" seems to be your real style.
I may regret getting a dog in this fight but, agreed. This has made me wonder for quite some time. Despite the signature, which at first I thought was worthy, I have seen few posts from Cultured Vulture that actually follow his/her own advice. Many responses are unnecessarily rude and merely exacerbate ill will on these forums.

Either change your signature or change your attitude towards others, one or the other.

Chill. Didn't you think the cartoons were funny?

FWIW I don't think he's dissing Nikon. There may be one or two new Canon FF cams to spend money on, so everyone should be happy.
EVERY new camera is relevant to the consumers of digital equipment.
Just because you dont like to hear that Nikon is coming out with a
camera why don't you find a site like "nikonians" for Canon users?

Oh thats right, they still announce and discuss Canon, Pentax, Sony,
olympus cameras on nikonians!

The price of computer equipment goes down largely because stuff is getting smaller, not because stuff is becoming cheaper to manufacture by the square foot. Obviously this particular effect does not apply to camera sensors...

Nikon Guy here...

Totally aware that without the Canon 5D it's possible the (rumored) D700 would never have happened.

Competition is good for consumers. I bet both Nikon and Canon fans alike will have more excellent choices in the near future!

Variety is the Spice of Life -;)

I have a G9 as a carry everywhere camera. As good as it is I would
prefer it only had 8 or even 6 MP's with lower noise and better DR.
If so, I'd probably get a lot more use out of the camera.
I really like the G9, I was going to buy one until I reviewed the low light capabilities, seemed ironic coming for Canon.

Whoever puts a decent sensor in a similar body will have a big seller.

Larry

More than two years later, probably three, Nikon catches up with a nice FF camera -- the camera I always dreamed of while they kept saying the DX was the future. I didn't want to invest in good DX lenses, knowing that FF was really the inevitable future. I also really miss the DOF control that comes with a larger format.

So I switched to the 5D.

I like my 35mm 1.4 L and the 24-70.

I'm a little vested in Canon now. Sorry Nikon. You were a little late.

But maybe when the D700 gets down to $2K, I'll buy one just to use with the AIS primes I'm now mounting on my 5D via adapter.

It's not the camera. It's you.

Stuff I own in my profile.

My dear friend we who bought the D300 do not need your sympathy but thank you anyway.

As I've stated many times I have 2, 5D's and A 1DII along with a 30D & 20D. The 20 & 30d's a gathering dust. At any rate I use the 1DII as my main camera with the 5D as a back up. If the job requires not too many pictures, I will use the 5D. I love the 5D but it has two annoying features. The white balance is poor. If I shoot in a room that is yellow, always with flash, i get really very yellow-brownish faces. The other annoying feature is its clanginess. Compared to my D300 that I bought because I have a lot of nice Nikkors, the 5D seems very slow indeed. I did get what I paid for with the D300 but in retrospect, the 5D may have not have given me the same value. For a non sealed body hat is essentially a 30D without its silly pop up flash. If Nikon comes out with a D700 that is FF I may get one. Being in both camps is a wonderful thing.

TEH Nikon is so awesomely cool, they're, like, the Apple of the
digital camera world!1 All their cameras should be encased in the
same shiny white plastic so I can be part of the fabulous Nikon
fanghey scene!!11 After all, the fankids of these two amazingly
innovative companies are the smartest, the most mature, the most
unbiased, the most logical and definitely the most stylish gadget

Hey

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the "accidently released" half baked brochure trick as a teaser tactic has been used by Nikon before? I think they did this with D70? Maybe somebody just messed up?? Don't know - anyway, I wouldn't be surprised to find a D700 joining the Nikon lineup and I hope it makes Canon sweat:)

I like the images produced by the Canon CMOS sensor very much and I want to keep using Canon gear. That's just a photographic taste thing.

At the same time, I want Canon to be heavily pressurized by as many camera companies' marketing and R&D depts as possible to ensure that the technology in and around that sensor continues to be improved. I will happily accept force and pain as drivers, too :)

As much as I think Canon produce great gear and care about their customers, I feel sure that without competition, they would be giving us a lot less and charging us a lot more than they currently are.

well i havent read all 4 pages of this thread, but looking at the kenrockwell.com image, the lens clearly has a DX logo on, most definitely not an FX.

makes it pretty obvious its faked, as why would stick a DX lens on your newest DX release... ;)

Also the D700 is still rumour-ware without an official Nikon press release - although we probably find out soon along that Canon won't lie down and bring out the 5d Mk 2 which I'm excited about.

Hopefully that both Nikon and Canon will improve on their QC DBS, Af probs, etc bit bad paying for an expensive camera only to be let down by DBS, etc.

just kidding of course.

It is a reasonable point - how will a Nikon FF medium cost camera fair against the current 5D - now sold at a discount - and then against a second generation 5DII - probably with a upgraded (?) 16MP sensor, and better body then the ist iteration. Presumably, canon has been listening to user feedback from the first 5D experience, such that we can look forward perhaps to a truly upgraded 2nd model.

I also have been using Nikon lens's mounted on my Canon dSLR's - currently using a Nion 17-35 on my 1DsIII. It's a great combo, and I am looking forward to mounting the Nikon 14-24 on my canon when I can get my hands on the adapter from 16-9.

Canon needs to come out with some new wide glass, and Nikon needs to come out with some new long glass. That's just the state of t hings.

Well, how well is the D3 fairing against all the FF canon bodies? I think its been shown that a 12mp FF sensor has traction in the market.

In any case, FF in the lower ranks was enevitable. Once Canon freshes up the 5D and Nikon releases a D700, I'll be intetested to see what "Me Too" camera Sony puts out to try and remind everybody that it wants to be taken seriously in the SLR market.

Personally, I would prefer A 40D or D80 grade FF camera. I don't need the advanced features in an FF as mush as in a crop body (as the crop would be used for more sports and wildlife) I'll have to wait another generation or two.

Yes, Nikon has had a peculiar habit of “accidentally” slipping information out about a week or two before launch. The last couple were well hidden webpages that were “accidentally” turned on to the internet before the formal release. You could only get to them by typing in the direct address (no links to them from main Nikon pages) but it didn’t take long for the address to be known online.
At the same time, I want Canon to be heavily pressurized by as many

Yes, agreed. Although I shoot Nikon, advances from any camera company are welcomed. Competition builds the breed. It is amazing how so many people don’t understand that. They’d rather “their” camera be seen as the best, even if it means the next camera won’t be any better.

Bob,

I understand your point and that has been talked for 3 years. My point was, we do not know what Canon will offer... yet...

May be they will announce a new camera with a new sensor that can capture more MP and have better or equal IQ to what we have on 5D now. It's been 3 years, I don't think Canon techs sitting and doing nothing. Nikon was able to design incredable sensor for D3, Sony designed 24 MP CMOS, we don't know what Canon has been up to. I won't be surprised if they offer great IQ with a new sensor along with more than 12 MP... It doesn't have to be 'trade off'...

does it affect you and your gear working now, or even then?

I never get it when folks with one brand worry about what another brand will do years down the road....

Use and enjoy what you have. Whatever it is, has to be better than what YOU were using years back. Thats all that counts now, isnt it?

No they wont. Nikon has been consistant with such releases.

Even when D700 comes out, I willl not feel cheated at all. D300 and D700 will have their uses side by side. As with D3, it stands alone until D3x.

Canon has its own worries and lags, too many people have voiced them already, and I don't need to repeate to you what they are.
