Nikon D80 compares too? (Purchasing advice)

Just realized that the Canon 40D with 17-85mm kitlens is after the
Canon cashback that they are running with now 12000SEK which is
exactly what I would pay for the Nikon D80 with 16-85mm kitlens...

Given that they are at the same pricelevel does the Canon then have
the advantage in features? Or is the D80 a better camera regardless
of price?
I'd say the 40D is in the next category above the D80, in most areas.
For example, 6.5 fps vs 3 fps continuous shooting speed, a robust
magnesium alloy body and newer features such as liveview. Remember
the 40D is really meant to compete with the D300. The more evenly
matched competitors to the D80 in the Canon line-up are the 450D
(XSi) and prior to its launch, the 400D (XTi).
i disagree IMHO.

i think the canons and the nikons slide in between each other in terms of price and features

for the cameras from nikon and canon that the OP is looking at it goes as follows:

Nikon D80: 549 euro
Canon 40D: 895 euro
Nikon D300: 1399 euro

dutch prices

the OP needs to figure out what features are important to him based on the photography he is going to do. then find the cameras that has those features. then at the same time look if the brand also offers the lenses he wants to use as they are at least equally as important.

the 3 cams that i posted have great ergonomics IMHO - cant go wrong with any of them actually.

my 2 cents

greets, Mark

(please correct me if I'm wrong)

The truth is that all of those camera will take good images. But at the moment, I would think that the EOS 40D is the best deal out there. That might change radically when the D90 hits the shelves (or it might not), but you may need to wait a couple of months to get your hands on it.

Is the 17-85 IS (stabilized?) The 16085 is (VR).

40D is above D80 in both features and body construction, a little more rugged.

So, to decide on that, given that money seems to be our of the picture, I'd go to a good store and handle both, check viewfinder, some of the basic controls.

Don't forget you're not buying only a camera, with dslrs, but stepping into a system. That's also part of the decision. And that means lenses you'll be getting later, mostly, and maybe, if of interest, flash systems.

So, here's what I know first hand and also from following this issue for a couple of years:

1) Nikon has the better WA lenses (

2) Both have similar mid-range lenses (24-200mm lenses/zooms), but Nikon has the best all-purpose long-range zoom, the 18-200VR, no Canon similar.

3) Canon has been known to have the best long teles, > 200mm, and it has a medium quality line, all f/4, which Nikon misses. In the faster apertures both are good, but prices are prohibitive. Nikon has a nice consumer 70-300VR lens.

4) Flash system of Nikon is considered best in the market.

40D is more updated camera, but IQ is about same, except maybe in low-light, 40D has a 2nd generation 10MP CMOS sensor, is a little better.

Good luck (If brand is no issue for you, at this point the 40D sure looks attractive; when I got the D80, there was no 40D, and soon after it was launched at 1,300USD body only. And, myself, I like Nikon's and, particularly, D80's ergonomics/handling).

Yes, the 40D kitlens I was talking about do have Image Stabilization (IS / same as Nikon VR)

At this stage it is looking more and more like I will go the Canon 40D route

Tomorrow I will go to the store and hopefully my credit card will accept the charge :D

Thank you all for your advice so far, it has really helped me allot!

I have a D80 (D70 previously) that I'm very happy with, but if I was
starting fresh right now, chances are that I would go with the 40D, as well.
Good luck!
