For the people who aren't self-obsessed with L lenses...

What was the first good non-L lens that you bought?

I'd say the Canon 100mm (non USM) macro for me. The Canon 28-135mm IS would be my second. I still have and use both.

so long as individual is happy with the results who cares what lenses they have L or otherwise?
if someone is looking for advice or opinion then fair enough.

It would be interesting to see a timeline of sorts---in what order people bought lenses.

Very sharp. Very fast focusing. Beautiful out-of-focus BG. Nice build. Great feel. Small size. With 1.6 factor, gives 135mm eq. I've always loved. Good for use with macro extension tubes.

Yes, the pics below are reduced & tweeked. So, no, they can't be used to judge the lens quality. (No one's going to be very much impressed with the 'detail' from my D2000's 2Mp sensor, anyway.) But, they give an idea of the narrow depth of field, and macro ability.

The fly shot is about 2/3 frame. Used with 68mm extension tube, at f16.

Cat pic is w/indoor lighting, at f1.8

Two-chicks pic was f2.5. Perhaps should have had f4 depth-of-field.

Brown chick is full frame, f2.2, to show bokah (sp?) on hillside just behind.

Both are built like tanks

As for the 50mm, f/1.8 I dropped it 4ft... Thought it was toast...... still works like a charm. I was VERY suprised and amazed.
