Hello,
How are you all...

today im contemplating buying a sigma sd14, after being given advice etc... anyway, i was wondering what problems (i mean manufacturing faults) any one has had with their SD14.

As manufacturing quality and product durability are important to me, i would like to know the things you have experienced.

Hello

You may want to read through this, it reveals some of the quirks.
SD-14 Compendium: http://www.foto.nordjylland.biz/SD14/SD-usertips.htm

I think Sigma can be described with:
  • not impressive Manufacturing Quality/Quality Control
  • very impressive Customer Service
The SD-14 can be described as:
  • not impressive speed
  • very impressive Image Quality
I have 13.000+ images with it so far.
On a tripod, nothing beats it.
For events, kids in play; very questionable.

Hi, i couldnt really find anything that i found to be bad about the sigma in that article... i mean some people who had a fault with alignment sounds like a random error... however, given good care, the sd14 are durable ye? i mean, they dont usually just pack up all together after the 1st year or so and never work again... as ive read since i posted last, they usually have a long life span, but just small manufacturing things that are always fixable occur

the SD14 was first released in March 2007, so it's only been available a bit over a year. But many users have 10s of thousands of images, some even 100,000+ images....

(Personally I'm now up to 8500+ on my March 2007 SD14... which isn't a very high # compared to some )

The Sigma cameras SD9 (released 2002) and SD10 (released 2003) are still in frequent use by many readers here too. I have both also, but don't use them much in comparison with SD14 and DP1.

The bodies seem well built and mine has never given me any real problems but Sigma's technology is certainly behind everyone's elses. My three main complaints are slow write times, poor battery life and slow, and sometimes inaccurate, autofocus. If you can live with those problems you'll do fine.

Hey, thanks for that... in terms of your complaints:

Ive never had a fast camera, and my dads D40x writes at about 5 seconds per image and takes about 10 seconds between shots for the flash to recharge. Also, i can buy a second battery, and as for auto focus.. i dont like using auto focus, so that shouldnt be much of a problem.

Your dad should get his camera checked out or buy faster cards as Phil's review didn't find that it took 5 seconds per image. He claims that the D40x achieves a consistent 3 FPS until the buffer is full and then it slows down to 1 point something FPS.

Yeh, after seeing that i think so, but i manage to not get annoyed at those types of speeds, so i dont think speed photography is something that is a factor in my camera decision, its more image quality, manual control and product reliability that im interested in.
