Announcement Monday

After a 'lot' of pushing with a pro dealer over here (UK) that is primarily a US dealer, I was told that an announcement was due before the end of the month, and possibly as early as Monday, about a new Nikon pro body.

I have no idea if they are stringing me along to keep my business (and I confess I'm hoping for a D3x so that the D3 falls in pricing a little further) but thought it worth repeating here in case Thom or someone can confirm they've heard similar.

And of course, the alternative is that we just wait.....as usual.

Think more along the lines of a D300FX. ;)

Pro announcements generally have some predictability to them, as there are usually press invites that go out prior, usually two to three weeks. Nikon would be foolish to announce pro equipment on a "last minute" basis, as it might not get covered by the press well, moreover when you announce in a vacation season (e.g. summer) you need to make sure that you don't accidentally lock yourself out of coverage.

At present, I know of no official Nikon invites to any event this summer. Your dealer is stringing you on.

How much pushing is a 'lot' of pushing? I wonder if they just said something just to try and satisfy your queries.

I was told today that a new camera was coming and it will be called a
Nikon D3-100, and it will blow Canon away.

This was from a Nikon Pro dealer who had just come back from a Nikon meeting.

He also said there was a lot of new lenses due soon.

Ok so we already guess this.

Nikon also denied there was a problem with dust and the D3, and suggested I stick double sided sticky tape inside all my lens rear caps.

It becomes semi-official when Bjorn R announces on his site that he's "leaving for a Nikon press event in Tokyo."

When the day comes that he says something like that again, you'll know that something is seriously up. Kinda like Christmas Eve. ;-)

I had never thought of putting tape inside the body cap. That might be a good idea if I can figure out a decent place to store the cap while shooting. Normally all the caps go flying off and stay off until the event is done.

it is probably nikon point and shoot announcement

Who cares.. my D3 is all the camera i ever could want.

And leaks always surface about 2 weeks earlier, no way they can control all that have info, or some site "forgets" to lock spec sheet.

It's looking more and more that it'll be at Photokina, D3X and D90 plus lenses.

I'm not sure a D3x would knock down the price of the D3. As to my logic, both cameras are geared towards different markets. I would think on the onset that the D3 would retain its price and the D3x would be priced near the same range as the 1DSMarkIII?

Of course, I could be wrong (I sometimes have a compulsive habit of being incorrect)...

No, it wouldn't be a good idea. You almost certainly don't want to keep dust and dirt around. Even the best double-sided tape is going to allow some grit to dislodge from time to time and eventually it's sticking power gets overwhelmed. So what happens is that you create a loaded source of what you're trying to protect your equipment from. Much better to carry a small makeup or art brush with you and use it to keep caps and equipment clean.

I do clean the caps regularly, even immersing them when needed. I just do not take care of the caps properly while shooting. No time.

Your advice about the double stick tape is probably sound, but I later thought about the possibility of the tape itself dislodging. That could become a disaster.

no, this is just FUD. how is any dust actually going to overcome the cohesion factor and dislodge from the adhesive? particularly for two-sided tape which has a high moisture factor. no, its not gonna happen. should you change the tape out periodically to ensure high attach rate? likely. but onces dust is attached its not coming off. ...dav

I mean, being a male and all that, it would be a hell of an announcement..

Sorry, couldnt' help myself but frankly, I doubt they'll announce anything this soon. It might hurt D3 sales depending on how close a new camera is to it.

I called it early that there would be a new camera but again, not this soon.

Damn! I would love to go to the olympics one time :)

Was gonna go to Photokina this year but i doubt I'll have the money
