G2 Extnd Warranty from Best Buy for non BB Purchase

Would folks who were able to obtain this be able to explain how they managed it ??

I bought my G2 on-line (not from Best Buy), then bought the 4-year warranty from Best Buy. This subject was covered in great detail in previous posts with a lot of people telling me my warranty is NO good. However, I went back to the store, twice, first to the camera department, then to the store manager - they both assured me the warranty was valid. So I don't really want to hear any more - 'well, what about in 3 years when you go back and there is a new manager...' I don't have any control over that. I am going to assume that it is valid and if I have problems and they pay for the repair - that's great. If not, I lost $59 - no big deal.

I'm not being critical, but the sales people at Best Buy are a little sloppy on this subject. For my extended warranty purchase, all I did was ask if I could buy the warranty. I told the sales person I bought my camera online. He checked with his manager. No problem. I didn't have my camera, or the original receipt, or even the serial number. Just a credit card to use to buy the warranty, and that's all they really cared about. You see, Best Buy gets a commission from the insurance company that insures the warranty. The insurance company wants to get all of the business they can (it's called the "law of large numbers" in insurance), so regardless of where you bought your camera, if you buy the Best Buy warranty, everyone is happy.

Keep in mind the insurance company that backs the warranty is protected by Canon's warranty for the first year you own your camera. They most likely won't pay anything if your camera needs to be repaired during that time.

The only flaw I can see in the whole system is how someone could buy the Best Buy warranty shortly after their Canon warranty ran out, if the camera is broken and needs repairs. The warranty insurance company should have protected themselves against this. But they didn't.

I'm in insurance and have done a lot of work in structuring and interpreting insurance policies. I read the warranty several times, very carefully. I couldn't find any problem areas. I bought it.

The above scenario is exactly the way my policy was purchased. But if you stop and think about it, what's wrong with this approach? If and when you actually apply for warranty coverage, that is when you MUST produce your original purchase receipt and that's the starting date for the warranty. So what's the point of bringing that to Best Buy? What's the point of bringing your camera and all the accessories? What are they going to do, not offer you the warranty because your lens cap is missing? No, like Tom99 said, they make money selling these warranty policies.

With that said, MANY BBs no longer sell warrenties for items bought elsewhere (2 of 3 in my area do not). You and I were lucky to find a store that still does. As I posted before, BB as a company has officially stopped the program. Some stores and employees, however, simply are not aware of that. I even found inconsistencies within the same store.

I've always wondered what the Best Buy warranty does when, in 2 years, this camera is no longer available? Do they give you a prorated value to apply towards another camera?

There is probably a cache of refurbished units that stay around for a long time. I recently searched for a "new" Kodak DC 290 and I found several companies that had them in stock - and that's a 4 year old camera.

But if a Canon G2, for example, is no longer available anywhere, and your camera is not repairable, they will give you "store credit" equal to the price you paid for the camera. Here is a quote from their Performance Service Plan.

"Products, including those within the original manufacturer's warranty period, may be repaired or replaced with a comparable product, or Best Buy will issue a voucher for the original purchase price at our discretion."
