For those who have LiveView: Do you use it if the camera is not tripod mounted or computer tethered? What type of shooting do you most commonly use it for?

So far, I have only used LiveView when the camera is mounted on a tripod or setting solidly on a table. I have yet to use LiveView for actually real-world shooting. Instead, I have been using LiveView as a tool to demonstrate that the soft-focusing or OoF problems are with the cameras, and not a matter of the lenses lacking the quality to provide a sharp image.

I covered a high school high jump event, I had my mark III with 300 f2.8 on monopod, instead of trying to track the jumper, I went to live view, focused on the cross bar, and took a 3 shot burst as the jumper cleared the cross bar. Seemed to work quite well

I recently used it with my 40D while shooting a Bar Mitzvah for a friend. It was useful for overhead photos of the guests milling in the cocktail hour area as well as for similar shots during some of the dancing (a ladder would have been preferable, but the over the head + LiveView method wasn't bad at all).

Since my 1D3 seems happiest MANUALLY FOCUSING (grrr), it's been a useful function.

It's also useful as a quick "mirror-lock-up" function (when assigned to activate at any time using the SET button).

I've never used it. I fact, I don't even know how to turn it on.

I can imagine it being useful for some macro work though.

Week end went to the wood with the wife.

Once I tried to make a low angle when the camera was very low almost touch the ground.
Failed.
I was struggling to get my eyes on the view finder.

I screamed, "Damn... !!!!!! I wish it has a live view".

Should I return this camera and wait for 5DmkII ?????

I am trying to teach myself to use it with my MP-E 65mm lens with 1DsMIII

only with manual lenses

I feel like it's a p&s camera when i use the live view

I shoot tethered and find it quite useful. You get a live feed and yes you can focus and zoom to inspect critical focus. I shoot a lot of my photos with razor thin dof so this is quite nice to have. and was quite unexpected as I haven't seen any mention of this aspect of liveView. Hope this helps.

When Canon first announced Live View, I dismissed it as a gimmick. After several months with the 1Ds3 I've changed my opinion. It's great with manual focus lenses and when trying to shoot something in a difficult position. Like trying to shoot with camera very low to the ground - instead of lying down on the dirt, it's much easier to engage Live View and kneel down. The only thing I do not like about using live view is when zoomed at 5X or 10X, I have no sense of the overall composition. There's a tiny pictogram indicating where the focus point is, but it doesn't help.

I wish the 1Ds3 had contrast detection or phase focus. In those awkward positions, any type of auto-focus would be helpful. The new XSi's Live View sounds quite nice. If there's a way for Canon to update the 1Ds3 firmware and add that functionality, I wish they would do it.

I've been using LV a lot more lately but haven't uploaded recent shots so here are some from the past...

Situation 1:

40D with 85 1.2 II... I wanted to get the shallowest DOF, focus on the wick, the place was awkward and the church didn't allow camera support because they plain didn't like me for some reason:

Situation 2:

40D with 17-55 2.8 IS... there were just too many people around and I had to do an overhead shot with decent framing:

Situation 3:

I sometimes use LV when the lens is stabilised and the focal length is relatively long. It gives a steady image to work on...
