Hi Everybody,

I was wondering if somebody tried to make some movies using D7i. Does anybody know where I can see some samples? I am considering purchase this camera but trying to understand all potential problems. I actually started to look at this camera almost a year ago (it was D7). Now I am almost ready.

I would appreciate all comments and links.
Thanks,
WeakMIPS.

I havent any sample movies to show yet, maybe I can shoot something tonight and put it somewhere (but where??) on the web.

Here is what the manual of the D7i says:

quote

"Up to sixty seconds of digital video with or without audio can be recorded. The motion JPEG image is 320 X 240 pixels (QVGA). The effective image area is 308 X 240 pixels; two thin lines will appear to the left and right of the image when played back."
unquote

The size/appearance is not great, 308x240 is les resolution then a TV has. The sound I found not too bad at all. Color and contrast is rather low, to me it looks like the D7i sends out raw viewfinder data. It also takes a lot of memory about 15 Mb for 60 seconds.

As taking pictures with a video cam is a compromise, so is shooting video with a photo camera. When you are in need is can help but if you want to shoot digital video's I would take a video camera.

cheers
Jurjen

Thanks Jurjen,

I just heard from somebody on this forum that D7i produce very poor videos due to low fps ( 15fps). Just wanted to see it by myself.

And I totally agree with you D7i is not for the video but would be nice to have it in pocket anyway.

It would be nice if you could post some examples somewhere. Unfortunately I do not have my own web site to post samples movie. Plus I did not realized it would take so mach space ( 15MB). I thought you could email it to me but the mail box I have only 6MB. So I guess it is not an option.
Thanks again,
WeakMIPS.

If you buy this camera, don't buy it for its movie mode. It is more of an add in, use it if there is nothing else type option. This camera is for taking still pictures, not movies. There is a sample move in Steve's Digicam review of the D7i in the sample images section. For what it is, it looks ok to me. Look at it yourself and decide.

Thanks Jim,

I was there a couple of days ago but could not find any movie samples. How silly of me. I should had tried harder.

But any way it looks good to me. Wanted to see video along with audio.

Just one more comment. D7i is a DIGITAL CAMERA with adio and video features and the one of the differences between D7i and D7 is audio option, which we did not have in D7. So taking in consideration new firmware update for D7 there are not a lot of differences between these two cameras as far as I can see. And should I spend $100-200 more for nothing? Probably not. I am trying to answer this question to myself. Still do not have a good answer. And I agree with all guys who did not post any reviews yet. The real comparison between D7i and D7 could be done only after new upgrade is released. (Please do not count Steve’s first look – It’s great. I was waiting for that. And it is just FIRST LOOK)

Any comments?

I too am interested in what a movie looks like from the D7i. I just returned from the Steve's web pages and could not find a sample. If someone has a precise URL please let us know.

I don't need high quality, however, I would find it a side benefit to be able to make 5-10 second little movies to help analyse my children in their sports. My boys at batting and my daughters at swimming. For example, to get a quick sample of my daughter's diving start. That way we can walk frame by frame during the first 2-5 seconds and really get a good idea of what she is doing.

My friend did this for me on his Nikon 950 and it worked very well at 15 frames a second. The images were clean - nice sunny day outdoors - and it was a great little tool for this sort of thing. I would hope the Minolta could provide similar results - hence the desire to see a sample.
Thanks Jim,

Hi Tom -

Try this URL:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/dimage_7i/samples/PICT0078.MOV

If this doesn't work, go to Steve's site and check the samples from the D7i. The movie sample is on the second row, right side.

Good luck,

Jim B.

Jim,

Thanks for that. Yes, by viewing that sample movie it will clearly meet my needs to do 5-15 second (or more) frame by frame reviews of action events used for simple analysis. I suspect with proper lighting and perhaps a tripod on a stable platform a person would likely get even better results than the posted example.

To me, the movie making capability is purely a bonus that provides another level of versatility in addition to the outstanding still imaging capabilities

Thank you,
Tom M
