I've just realised that all the fuss with cameras, lenses, composition, exposure, zone systems, location, luck, chromatic abberation, post production, unsharp masks etc is not required!!

All we need to do is create every possible image just by electronically generating every possible combination of pixels!

Because we want to keep the possibilities finite we'd just go for say 6MP images. Because you can pick the perfect photo of that dolphin jumping in the sunset 6MP will be heaps - you'd never need to crop and it would be so sharp and clear. Lets stick to 8bit too - we don't need any head room or scope for adjustments.

Its probably gonna be a lot of images - but most could be discarded as they'd look like random noise. Just keep the ones that make a perfect image.. no not those ones that have one pixel out - the perfect ones.

Ok... so 6MP... thats 6 million pixels. 8 bit means that each pixel can have 24 million different values I think..

So we'd start by generating a perfectly black image and then just change the first pixel to each of the 24 million combinations... and then the first two pixels.. although that would be a bit over half a trillion combinations... then the first 3.. gulp.... hmm we still have 4,999,997 pixels left...

So I think we'd end up with something like 24,000,000^6,000,000 images... or 24 million multiplied by itself 6 million times. But remember we could delete lots of these... that might take a while to sort through them then...

The planet might need a bit more storage too...

Actually lets make them 1 bit images with 500 pixels.. that would give us a few black and white icons at least?

Huh?

nevermind me.. there'd even be too many black and white icons to generate... (the number is about 170 digits long!)

how about just some single pixel images? 1 bit ones that is..?

while mathematically you are correct that every image is just a very long series of numbers which would be generated after a long while if you went through all of the possible combinations, what would the computing power needed to do this be?

It technically means that wedding photographers would be replaced by IT consultants who flick through the photos looking for ones that look a lot like the bride and groom. they could then go through and pick up all those photos of the bride and groom at every possible age.

Another possibility of this however, is that it would generate all the pornography in the world, even the illegal type.

and I've got an awesome picture of myself, Keira Knightly and Scarlett Johnannsen!

Rename them to .mp3 and .avi first...

Or the classic entropy theory...
Mix a small bit of cream into a cup of black coffee.
The "system" starts out with low entropy (pure cream, pure coffee),

but quickly gains entropy. There is a chance (howver small), that the molecuse could spontaniously re-arrange themselves to that exact moment when the cream & coffee are still seperate. Of course, this observation would take longer than the age of the universe

This topic should have been started in the Metaphysics forum.

This is similar to the extremely common practice of randomly aiming a camera, with random settings, and then using Photoshop to get the image originally desired.

Another random technique is "camera tossing". Throw your Nikon D3 into the air while on self-timer, and see what interesting photo comes of it before it smashes into the ground.
