Does anyone know how to get this effect? blows me away every time...

He's been covered here many times and I am in awe of his work. He takes advantage of his surroundings for the majority of his effect, but I still think some dodge/burn and saturation enhancements really do help. Maybe we need a mini competition to see if we can simulate his look. Anyone have a cool photo that would make a target? :)

Thanks a lot Kent - definitely be reading them...

Competition eh? That would be fantastic, we would learn so much. If you think there are any likely candidates in my flickr, just tell me how to upload to here.

My pics are very different to his, but maybe you magicians can do something

In "Popular Photography Magazine - June 2008" there is an articol about Rarindra Prakarsa technique. It's a kind of interview with him. I think it's interesting.

Just supllying the picture :)

and a very misguided attemp popping out the subjects. Desaturated the surroundings a bit.

Hm, the colors of the girls' shirts looked brighter in Photoshop.

That would be great if I could read that. Is there a copy of it online somewhere (I have searched but couldn't find anything)

I'm living in Indonesia, so can't get a real copy :(

Thanks all

(one thing) that really optimizes his style/results is (most) of the light is
coming at the viewer (or from the side or side-back).

This is a perfect proof that/how front-lighting flattens.

His separation and dimensioning (absence of flattness) is fantastically good.

His stuff has too much noise, yet maybe that makes it more charming.

He deserves a better camera.

Great stuff/great feeling.

Did these a while ago...

Trying to copy Rarindra's exceptional work...(without success!!) but this was as near as I got with the images used.

He is my favourite photographer so I remain in awe of his work and offer my humble attempts.

Best wishes

Ray

ps files are gif so may take a minute to load to show the before and after

but here is my try.

You posted images in AdobeRGB. Most browsers and some graphics applications don't understand color spaces and won't display the colors correctly.

When posting an image for viewing online convert it to SRGB.

This is the explanation for your won observation that the colors were different.

Ray: I went searching for some hints on how he does it (with little success) and saw your picture on another forum - amazing, I really like it.

Pixel Poetry: Like the other poster said, I think you've nailed it. Have you tried your post processing techniques on a photo like Rarindra's? Care to share how you edited the pic (hint hint) I'd love to learn.

Could the link be broken or is just my browser that has a problem with it?
Could you e-mail it to me if it's not too much trouble?
