Why did you choice Canon?

Cameras aren´t cars. And Canon is the only one which don´t supplies a lens hood (beside some entry-level Nikkors).

When 1D mark III had problem (AF mirror), even on limited batch
numbers, Canon admited it and tried hard to fix it.
Typical Japanese samurai. They pay success with seppuku tradition.
You must be joking.

Let's be crystal clear: They released a camera that they KNEW had an
AF problem at the time of it's release. No ifs, buts or maybes. They
even told RG about the problem when they gave him a beta camera to
review, a month before they released the camera. Despite not being
able to fix the problem, or even find the cause, they released the
faulty camera. Hoping, IMHO, that they could fix it with firmware.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be and the 'fix' actually required a
recall. But it took them 6 months to publicly admit there was a
problem, all the while continuing to sell the faulty cameras.

You really believe it was honorable for them to release a product
with a known fault, then not even admit there was a problem until
they had found the apparent solution?

And now, a year later with people still returning faulty cameras for
the 3rd, forth and 5th times, they still don't admit that there is
still a problem.

On the D300 DBS, maybe it's an issue and maybe it isn't. It does seem
there are some users experiencing it, but it's by no means all users
or even a decent sized minority. I think I've seen maybe 5 users on
only looking on DPR ?

the D300 forum complaining about it. Compare that to the number of
MkIIIs with a focus issue, or the still-unadmitted err99 issue and
the constant premature stutter failures in the MkIIs that were never
admitted as a fault.

to show it's age and the new-fangled 1D looked interesting. So I bought one, and a half dozen lens - never looked back and I still have my 1st 1D.

To better answer your question, fps, AF, body integrity, and lens choices.
I choice it since they started out nice with nice AF lenses. Then the
digital era came and they had best products with best low noise and
AF capability. Sometimes miss the velvia time. But now got great low
noise time. Yeah, Indeed!

Why did you go with Canon?

People who claim to be open minded never see it my way.

Cameras aren't cars, but they both are consumer items with low and high level variants and thus the comparison is valid -- If I want a cheap basic lens I may not want to pay extra for a lens hood that I do not intend to use. Canon gives you the choice at this level -- as indeed does Nikon as you just stated yourself.

Because in 2003 / 2004, those dumb a$$ at Nikon's headquarter said 1.5X is better and the way to go, and they have no plan for FF. So I jumped for a 5D after 25+ years of Nikon F2 --> F5. It was Nikon that forced me to choose Canon, not my free will.

I wouldn´t call a 10-22mm, 70-300mm IS "cheap basic lenses". I was referring to the 18-55mm both brands offer. This isn´t a choice - they force the customer to pay extra money for something that should be in the box.

Or to say it with your car example: Would you buy a car that has no ABS...because it´s offered as an extra? (I think ABS has become something necessary today)

"It takes an astute and clever mind to appreciate the depth of me."

I would simply interject that it it takes an astute and clever mind to appreciate the depth of what you produce, which requires hip-waders to navigate.

has taught me that they make the best glass and, with the advent of digital, the best system overall. Nikon is struggling to catch up but still does not have the glass.

No wolves, just Irish Wolfhounds around here.

Canon has chosen me.

At the time I had to put all my Nikon lenses aside, Canon was the only option to get cleaner images at high ISO. Then their first 'cheap' FF came along... It took Nikon a half decade to catch up.

This year will start setting the fine line between Canon and Nikon (also Sony and near future Pentax will be in the group too).

You will see many professional photographers shooting with multiple brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony) for their different needs. Why? Because it will be easier to purchase a kit than a certain lens (such as buying a Nikon body with their 200 mm lens will be cheaper than Canon 200 mm 2.0 itself or buying upcoming Sony 24 mp with a nice all around lens will be cheaper than 1DsMIII -and it's upgrades- for landscape+studio work).

Don't be a fan of a name/brand... Otherwise, they'd get spoiled easily and keep using you and your wallet for their own good.

Be an aggressive customer to all barnds, only that way these companies do work for us and make better products. Love their competition no matter what, lay back, watch and enjoy the ride with better products at cheaper prices.

The 300D was the only affordable DSLR in the game.

I STAYED with them for the image quality.

As my photography has evolved, I've begun to question that decision however. Its becoming increasingly difficult to support a company that intentionally cripples its products (HELLO 580EX, 580EXII, 300D, 350D, etc...), to sell accessories and build in product differentiation where it wasn't necessary.

The 580EX PC terminal crippling debacle may indeed be the last straw.

We'll see how they address it, but time is running out. I WILL make a decision on my brands future in the next 8 months.
apart from that I've always been disappointed with canon prosumer
bodies until 40D arrived.

I used a Konica Minolta 5D which was a nice camera good colors. But i Needed something more. I went into the store and picked up the 5D and immediately new it was right for me. The Ergonomics Fit my hand perfect and the colors had this certain feel to them that I had never seen.

Plus I thought the AF was lightning fast becuase the Minolta 5D was brutally slow.

Over all it was the best purchase I have ever made :)

I bought the Nikon D70 as my foray into digital. The AF would not grab the subjects and just the bright backgrounds or banners regardless of mode af point. I find some irony that I have a 1DmkIII the center of AF controversy. It rocks as did the 30D and now 40D.

I am basically retired .... I still do some work for a few special clients and I still own a Canon but since 2007 my main camera has been my H2 and H3's.

'Stop it now or you will go blind'

Already had a film EOS and the 20D was far and away the best reasonably priced DSLR when I moved into digital, far better than any Nikon of the day and I liked Canon UI better. Now, of rouse, Nikon has come back far and has much better bodies (if not UI) aside from sensors and even there they are pretty much up to canon aside from facing the 5dmkii which they can currently only do at huge cost.

I use both Canon and Nikon, but Canon is the camera I reach for most of the time....I prefer L lenses more than nikon pro lenses..

When I first got into DSLR photography Canon was by far and away the leader in camera quality. So, like many others I started with Canon and upgraded and invested in good Canon glass. At this point I will concede that Nikon has caught up with Canon in quality of DSLR cameras. I am not gonig to get into a useless debate about who has the best DSLR. At this point I am a Canon user, and I am happy with the IQ I am getting with my equipment. Simple as that. If I were new into DSLR photography, I will admit I would have a very hard time choosing whether to go with Canon, Nikon or some other up and coming company, such as Sony.
