Can someone convince me to give up my G9 for a D-Lux 3?

I am also slightly worried about the size of the D-Lux 3 as my hands are large!

I now have THREE compact cameras: D-Lux 3, Sigma DP1 and the G9, my latest purchase.

I would not give up the D-Lux 3 because it has its own pros and cons as do all of them. 16:9 is native to the D-Lux 3 and it also shoots RAW.

G9 is a more versatile camera and has exceptional macro/closeup capability, not to mention the great video and the time lapse.. built like a tank and great image quality considering the small sensor.. also has IS.

DP1 beats both of them when it comes to image quality but it is slow as a turtle.

Each camera has some function or characteristic I like.. that is why I have 3 of them.

The ability to 'see' the shot is more important than the gear.

...I'd strongly recommend adding the half-case by Luigi to accomodate, your large hands. His case made handling my D-Lux 3 much easier as I, too, have very large hands.

A very pocketable camera, the D-Lux 3's performance is best in bright daylight but seems to suffer a bit of noise in low light. And I prefer using my 4 year old Canon A80 for indoor macro photography; images are not pastey or appear to have brush strokes taken to them. The D-Lux 3 will perform well if you bear in mind its good and bad points.

Looking at your images and others, I see the D-Lux 3 is a great performer. I will likely make your same choice and get the D-Lux 3 and keep the G9.

From what I can see the D-Lux 3 has some really nice color I do not see with my G9. The detail is incredible!

You have been using this camera for a while. Does it feel comfortable to hold and use with one hand? Did you get the leica leather case for it. And last, do you find yourself using an extra battery? I usually get extra batteries for my cameras and seldom use them.

Sorry for the "questionnaire"

noise in low light will not bother me. Noise is part of digital and as I remember, it was part of film, too!

...the noise seems a bit more splotchy than grainy, especially when magnifying (or cropping!?!?) the image.

Adobe CS for your post processing? Sometimes I feel frustrated at my images - just having only PS and not the more elaborate software that improves some pictures a great deal.

It feels small and likely to be dropped and I have small hands... I always use a wrist strap with the D-Lux 3. It's a bit slippery and small so I do not wish to drop it.

The leather case would just get in my way. I use a belt pouch and there is no point in advertising you have a Leica. Yes to the extra battery. I always have two batteries with me.

Not a problem.. that's what forums are for.

I use Photoshop CS3.. but let me give you a little secret... Picasa is also quite good for use with the D-Lux 3... and it's free.

Don't know about getting rid of the G9 but my dlux3 is probably the nicest pocket camera I have used. I carry it in a small belt pouch with an extra battery whenever I am out and don't want to carry the M8 or my 1DMKIII. Shoot in raw and you wont be disapointed.

The D-lux 3 is a great camera but the G9 is no slouch, we cannot really tell you to give up a great camera for one we like I guess, it is a matter of taste and what is useful to you. I sold a GX100 which is an excellent camera, terrific, but I did not seem to use it as much as the D-lux, the D-lux seems to inspire me as in itself it is pleasing to meand this encourages me to use it, it is very aesthetically pleasing which should not be important, but I find it technically acceptable too and am enjoying using it to produce pictures. best wishes ...paul
