Why did you choice Canon?

I shoot canon, because I bought an EOS 650 who featured the new EF mount in 1987. At the time, the new EOS system was a revolution for AF performance (speed)

I love the crop factor at the long end, I hate it in the wide range

Don't tell me Nikon can't surpass Canon IQ. Its not the issue.
All DSLR's take great photos period.
The remaining factors to be considered great, will be it's features.
Sadly Nikon cameras have more attractive features to offer.

Nikon's features are incredible but their lens line up is still lacking.

For a young emerging pro on a budget(yes, we really are out there) I don't feel they have a lot of choice.

If you only have $2500 to spend the 17-40mm, 70-200mmf/4 and 580ex coupled with a 40D in capable hands and you have a pro quality set-up. I think that is what stopped me from getting a D300

Hi.
I'm planning to buy a new camera.

As you use both d300 and 5d I ask you which one is your choice if you could have only one ?
Thanks !

...the 5D's clunky ergonomics or focus sensor placement!

While the shooing experience isn't as sexy in the hand as with a Nikon body, the 5D's image quality makes it worthwhile.

It's not the camera. It's you.

Stuff I own in my profile.

because the sony A100 high ISO pictures were very noisy, and I was impressed by the IQ of 5D photos on the web.

Well, this is really my first real contribution to this Canon forum. My story:

A couple of months back I made a major switch from Nikon to Canon. I was always curious about the 5D and FF. The Nikon D200 was ok but I was really getting fed up with the high ISO noise and the fact that Nikon's first FF camera was $5K :( Was not interested in the D300. I am a 2 body shooter and dropping $10K for 2 D3 was not in the budget.

So, after many months of resisting, I broke down and bought a used 5D. Since I've been through my share of NAS, I pretty much did not want to go through the same with Canon lenses so I decided to get the 35L as my first lens. Wow, I fell in love with the 5D/35L combo instantly. Then I got the 85mm1.8 and what a sharp lens it was.

To make the story short, I was originally set on keeping one foot in each camp but found I really never cared to pick up the D200 any longer. Since then, I've sold all my Nikon gear (2 x D200, 80-200f2.8, 85f1.4, 17-55f2.8 and Sigma 30f1.4) with the exception of some SB800's and bought more Canon gear so now I am convincingly Canon:

2 x 5D
35f1.4L
85f1.8
135f2L
580EX

And now I am happy as ever :)

I first had Nikon stuff, but Nikon don´t made some steps forward. The D300 has a disappointing high ISO performance for me(well, the reviews say it´s good...but only because of massive NR) so I don´t get it for this high price. I ordered an 30D for the third of the price of a D300 and were happy. I prefer the high ISO performance and IQ over it. Nikon is still unable to give us an camera with an sensor that is better as the old 8MP sensor introduced in 2004.

Nikon should think about getting better sensors as the noisy Sony ones.

Now I´m waiting for the 50D.

...you hear is the subtle humor going right over your head ;-)

It takes an astute and clever mind to appreciate the depth of me.

I am the last sane person on earth.
If this is you trying to say that you passed on a Nikon because the owner community is elitist, then you need to work on your sarcastic tone. Especially because you sound elitist yourself.

Not funny. Or amusing.

In your defense, I had a Nikon user slamming "that printer company" because "serious" photographers use Nikon. Oooookay... I'll be sure to pass a note to all those white-barreled cannons on the field sidelines. That Nikon user would also probably make fun of my choice of buying an Olympus kit that offered the most opportunity for learning at the time. My pro kit will be, again, whatever fits my need.

You're happier with a 30D compared to the Nikon D300?

Wow!

I am shocked!

But I am also happy...

because I switched to Canon...from Nikon.

Now I wait for the 5D Mark II...3 bodies...1 1DS3, 1 5D2, and 1 40D...that will make my collection complete...for now.

When I see at the high ISO shots and at my bank account, yes, I´m happier ;-) . The 30D has served me well in rain and tropical conditions(butterfly house) without much advertising for this like on the D300.

1) Because I saw a EOS-1D Mark II back when I didn't even know what exposure means;

2) Because I didn't know Customer Service can suck at suck a high level.

..NOT washing my hands before every shoot ANY MORE..
hopefully

I choose Canon initially for the low noise compared to Nikon and still do - I did a shoot recently my 5d against D200 low light shoot - ISO 800 - 1600 stuff - the nikon could not compete - totally unusable images. D300 may be better I am told.

After several years with Canon I have appreciated how good (UK) the Canon service centres are esp Lehmanns - nothing but prasie here ;-)

Canon has flaws yes - but for me could never consider another brand

Good for you!

Well good for me too!

I don't regret switching to Canon from Nikon. Although I know that in some aspects some Nikon products are better than some Canon products, that's okay IMO. In a way it's good competition. They will push each other to be better. We as consumers will be the benefeciaries. Great!!!

At that time I had to choose between Canon 20D and Nikon D70. Nikon was a camera of the year, had good reviews and I almost got on the hook. My friends have both; I compared and then chose 20D. Never trust reviews anymore.

I have always shot canon. Long ago started with a TX later a 650 than a G1 followed bij a Digital rebel/300 and now a 1DMKIIn.

Sofar, I have not been disappointed other than once when my 1DMKIIn gave up on automatic exposuremeasurement in Costa-Rica.

And as we all now once you are locked into the lens system of one brand it is hard to go to another. Not that I would want to.

All this fuss about switching to Nikon for a D300 or D3.... I let it pass and enjoy taking pictures.

In the end the difference is not that much. The people who like the pictures and possibly buy them are not aware of the minimal differences.
