Saw a bunch of ducks this morning looked strange to me.
Quite an ordinary looking duck, rather dull.
Male on the right.

Until you spook them...then...

Then you see why they are called "Blue Winged Teal".

First time I have seen this duck so I feel lucky today.

Thanks for looking.--

I see them occasionally down here, and have shot them a few times. But I never can seem to get them spooked...mine just lounge around and never seem to fly! Glad to finally see what they look like when they open those wings.

Nice catch.

This is a Blue wing teal. Pretty common duck.
Thanks citori, if you read my post I did ID the duck as a Blue Winged Teal.

What I did stress was that it was a new duck for me, because it is not very common in this area, and even though African Lions are "Pretty" common in Africa there are not many around here nor in Alaska (I think). So I have not photographed one of them either.

Interesting series and nice captures. Just out of curiosity, did you deliberately choose 1/500s for the in flight shots? I was wondering if a faster shutter would have been a bit sharper.

Thanks for the comment. I set the ISO at 400 because of the poor light and that meant that 500 was the fastest the camera would give me and still give a central reading on the meter.
If I cannot achieve at least 500 then I up the ISO even farther.
