Is LA-DC58 the only available lens adaptor if I want to add a UV lens to protect the lens? Seems pretty awful to me as it protrude to far out. Probably can't be helped because of a need of space to allow the lens to move in and out while zooming.

What are the options for just to add in a UV lens?

Thanks

Search for lensmate, tiffen, hakuba. All make smaller "tubes" for filter attachment.

The canon thread is a 46.5mm, and...
Tiffen - 46.5 -> 43mm (Circuit City, many other places)
Lensmate - 46.5 -> 49mm (www.lensmateonline.com)
Hakuba - 46.5 -> 52mm (www.47stphoto.com)
Kenko - 46.5 -> 52mm (www.2filter.com)

OK - I have a really dumb question!!!!

Are there any particular gotcha's related to the stepping (is this the correct term) differences amongst these lens attachments? For example, does a step down have any impact on the overall "area" of the shot available (at the CCD)? And, when stepping UP, what are the implications on other aspects of the camera (covering the flash, viewfinder, etc which I think I have seen referenced here).

Without actaully having seen any of these units, the difference in thread size seems pretty significant (the Kenko one steps up by about 20% for example).

One final question - if I buy one of these I assume that any filters I subsequently buy must be consistent with the new stepped-up (or down) thread size. Is there a defacto standard for filters thread sizes? For example, if I went with a Kenko do I have less filter availability than (say) the Tiffen?

Thanks in advance.

I bought the Lensmate & a 49mm-> 52mm stepdown ring. I have a lot of 52mm filters that I used on my Nikon SLR. The Lensmate is a well made piece, but I really don't like having to use the stepdown ring. I ordered a Kenko 46.5-> 52mm so I don't have to bother with the stepdown. The Canon lense on the G2 is pretty small so I don't think using a 43mm would be a problem, but I don't know for sure. All of those filter sizes are avalible. The lense adapter tube does stick out from the camera a bit, but it's great protection for the lens & it gives you a better way to hold the camera.

Thank you Crashton,

Aside from the step up/down ratio's, are there any other obvious characteristics I should watch for when comparing the Lensmate to the Kenko (for example)? I do like the fact that the colour is coordinated with the G2 (minor, I know). Any specific thoughts on the "optics" of the two products for example?

Thanks, Mark

I can't tell you about the qaulity of the Kenko as I haven't recieved it yet. Neither of these tubes has any optics. They are just empty tubes that allow you to mount filters or accessory lens to your G2. The optics part is what you choose to put on the end of the adapter tube. Buy the best filters you can afford. Some of the cheapies aren't even coated.
