F56AM flash is $450 almost everywhere - what gives?

I was told about a month ago that Sony was going to be putting all
prices back up and that their prices would be the same at all places.
I forgot about that until just now.
Sony put all prices back to MSRP? Who were the people saying they
know what they are doing? Do they want to fail?

Sony HVL-F56AM - $450
Nikon SB-800 Speedlight - $310
Canon 580EX II Speedlite - $420

Nikon has the best flash system in the industry by most accounts.
And Sony thinks this will sell Alphas?

Moronic.
The Nikon seems to have a really good price..

bought the 56AM when it was on sale for $309.. its pretty impressive I never had a flash with a modeling function before..

The Canon is only $30 less that is 7% maybe.. Hardly Moronic.. just a bit more, with the lens debate when you drill into the numbers Canon is usually the cheapest with Sony and Nikon Neck and Neck...

I was thinking of sony might want to phase out F56AM, since F56AM was
mysteriously off from sony site for quite a while.

the $309 street price is not good for the whole production line up,
since the new F42AM cost $300, only $10 cheaper than F56AM. And we
know the new flagship flash is on the way. Maybe it is sony's
strategy to mark obsolete models a high price to make new models more
attractive?
I am thinking they were trying to remove it and had second thoughts... because of demand. maybe the 42 isn't doing well.. I hate the look of the control panel on the back.. its like something out of a 70's flash...

The Canon has more features and is brand new. The Sony is based on a older Minolta design - by all accounts it was a simple re-badge.

Going from a competitive $310 to an uncompetitive $450 is pretty moronic IMO. It wasn't $310 for a week it was a year at least. Something jumping 45% overnight seems out of line to me.

Well we always paid more over here, but its gone up to £270 (up £30 odd) for the sony, and the nikon SB800 is down to just over £200 (down £35-£40), so I think its down to other factors, not just the UK market.

If nikon can drop prices on their flashgun, and their top one at that..why not sony? Looks like the rot is setting into the usa buyers also, welcome to the club, its not a very fun one ;-)

Oh and the 70-200mm is up from £1600 to over £2000, thats a cool £400 price increase ($800 to USA folks) nice eh??

I am not the 'Ghost Hunter', nor am I the Irish actor in the 'Quiet Man' ;-)

B&H used to sell it for $309, now it is $450. Did the US dollar
suddenly plunge?
Have you checked if one of the prices was for gray market and the
other for the US model? B&H often has both versions.

Walt
No, it 56AM was just on a rally good 30% off sale for a while.. I got one Full US version..

Maybe they didn't ahve enough 42AM at the start and were willing to use the 56AM to keep from an embarassing sell out too early.. Ala Nikon..

Not sure but it was on Sale.. it is not anymore.

Yea at best buy we got word that Sony had forbid price matching on all of their SLR accessories. I was originally wondering what it was but like an earlier poster said it was to stabilize their prices everywhere.

I email newworldvideodirect asking if they have the f56 in stock and never receive a reply back. I will stay away from them for now until someone tells me differently.

Hey!

Yup, the price for that flash is not ridiculous!

I got my F56 flash for $309 last year. And I just can't see what would justify the price increase of $140 within just a few months.

Not just the price of that flash went up but everything else also.

Now I wonder how much the new 24MP FF will cost now. Actually I do know 2 or 3 Nikon and Canon users who are excited to see the new Sony FF cam... one even consider to switch if the performance is good and the price is right.

Sony is still small in DSLR world even with the experience of Minolta behind it. With the price increase it will be hard to attract new buyers of whom could become a long term royal user. They will now loose some potential buyers this way.

Well, it is sad to see this.

Take care,

Oh deary oh my. He's right. Bessie, bar the doors and batten down the windows. This storm may be a doozie. :-)

I fear our original (sane) prognostications will prove correct, and this sub-$2k delusion will seem like a marijuana haze bender...with a bad hangover.

I did order from them on 6-1-08 with confidence. I'm not sure what you read or if you read your own link but they have more very satisfied than unsatisfied consumers. A lot more satisfied consumers by 79% WOW that's seems very scary. Maybe I shouldn't have ordered from them since everyone didn't give them a whopping 100%. To be perfectly honest I've read tons of reviews and I've never found a single review that was 100%, hence my reasoning for ordering from this company. If I went off anyones experience with a company then I wouldn't own anything. I will give you an update when I receive my package and then maybe it will help relieve some or your fear of this company> > > or not.
Check this one out, I ordered the 42.

now it seems like 500 dollar best buy deals were a dream.
That makes me happy, only because I paid full price when it was new and was very sad to see that I could have saved hundreds of dollars if I had waited.
