As i tried to decide between f100fd and sd 870 i went to imaging resources and
compared the pictures of both cameras.

One of standard pictures for comparison there shows some sheets of fabric on the left side, when you look at those pics yousee how the fuji is erasing details there, begining from 200iso up to 800, that are still there when you look at the canon shots. I never saw that anybody mentioned it, is it only me who considers this an issue in terms of picture quality.

Canon applies unsharp masking, Fuji doesn't. Apply a bump of unsharp mask to the fuji image if you want to do a fair comparison.

Hi there....

Take another look at iso 400...and this time compare the "Proportional scale"..RHside of picture(Big white round thing).....And see how many gradations you can clearly make out...it would seem the canon has completely obliterated these.....

Sharpness is not everything....and btw the canon sharpening looks shocking....with very undesirable artifacts overpowering the picture.......

Hope this helps...

Thanks for your input Jim and Kiwi, sometimes i find the canon pictures also oversharpened but in this case it seems to me like the details are just lost, will they be there if you apply sharpening?

Fuji sharpens in camera as well, maybe not as much as Canon but they definately do some. I think almost all cams do some sharpening and many allow you to adjust how much. Good cameras allow you to choose NONE and do it all yourself later if you want, at least thats my opinion.

They all do, but not all apply in camera masking according to a canon white paper on the topic.

It's you, not the camera!... Hmm there is no camera in this case... Well, then it must be your eyes!...

Seriously, you will not see many people here saying the things you rightfully observed, but I believe you have good eyes! Aggressive NR comes with a cost. They will tell you that it can be easily fixed. No, it cannot. You can't bring the detail lost by in-camera NR back but using your computer you can always clean the noise more effectively in a controlled fashion, if desired and necessary of course.

Looking for the millionth time at the IR website...

Interesting...

The dollar bill - to me, Canon won. I liked the sharpening.

The Wine Vinegar bottle on the last photo, even though the Fuji photo was larger, it was sharper.

I wish Marti hadn't retired. I found her easier to compare than with the mannequins! And, it is hard to compare her to a mannequin.

I also have trouble comparing when they are different sizes - like the house poster.

I am wanting to see the Oly Sp-570 images get done. I check for it every day. Finally, I just went with the first review and bought it. We'll see.
