Hey Gang,

View from a Garden Bench is a new gallery of images from a shoot on Tuesday morning with the E-10. http://www.pbase.com/sandman3/view

It has some of the same old stuff and some new stuff I've been playing with. I did something radically different in posting these to pbase....I resized them all to no greater than 800 pixels on the long side, instead of posting the much larger higher resolution size.

Looking forward to hearing from you on the images and on the resize. As always comments, criticism, and feedback are appreciated.

Hi Sandman,

Some very pleasant work, and so easy on the eyes to go from shot to shot. I'm glad to see that the little amphibian was happy to help you to make a great shot even better! :) Good stuff, this!

Very nice. A quick comment on the resize: I think it works. I use 800 or 600 at pbase. Does the job, I think, and saves Slug some server space.

Content-wise, I like the flower macros (always do). Of the series of trees, I think the last one works best because of the contrasting light in different parts of the frame. But I think the sleeper photo in the gallery is the one of the empty rocker. The quality of light, the color and composition (lots of parallel, angled and intersecting lines), and the way the chair is set in the corner... Can't quite explain (maybe that's one definition of a good picture).

Hi jim,

As usual your photos are excellent. I loved the shots of the tree....the patterns and the details in the trunks.

I see the E-10 produces an image that has little or no noise. As to the size, I like the overall size, but it is my personal preference to see either thin borders or no borders.

What are your thoughts about the E-10's image files compared to the C2100UZ? It seems the E-10 produces a softer image??? Is this true? or did you apply a soft effect to the images? What I mean is that the contrast seems to be lower in the E-10 images...not a soft focus. This would probably be due to the fact that no lighter pixels were added along the edges. I am seeing this in your images and Kim's as well.

Thanks for sharing these
Rich :)

L.D. Louks,

Thanks for looking and commenting. My amphibian friend was a camera hog! He posed very nicely for me then joined his friends for a swim in the little pond!

Thanks again for the feedback.

jnat,

Thanks for the comments! I promise to continue with the resize from now on. I even wrote a resize action that will automate the process for me. The upload to pbase was much faster! LOL!

Thanks for the comments on the trees. This was a little something different for me. I learned a thing or two in shooting these with the wide contrast in light....expose for the highlights! I lost almost a dozen with blown highlights!

As for the sleeper, I agree the lone chair is not very interesting. Let's see what others have to say. I'm also not sure about the haystacks in the field. It was absolutely beautiful in the field, but the image did not turn out to my satisfaction.

Thanks again for your comments and critiques. I learn a lot from a good critique!

RichO,

THanks for your comments and critique. I agree that the E-10 images are a little soft, but I have not exactly figured out why. I am shooting in normal contrast and normal sharpness, and I am running one, sometimes two sharpening routines on most of the images to get to the level you are seeing. On the UZI, I almost always had some room to play in levels and/or curves, but I find that the E-10 is almost always right on the money for exposure, giving a vey wide histogram on the levels palate. When I do adjust levels, and uncheck the preview, I often find that the original was more pleasing to me than my "tweaked" version.

I'll keep working on the sharpness. I would prefer the images to be just 10 or 20% sharper, but not to the point that I'm sharpening the noise! So far, I have not played with the custom settings for contrast and sharpness on the E-10, working more on getting good focus and the other technical issues down. I think it is time I addressed this issue!

Rich, thanks so much for your feedback. You know how important it is!

I went back after I wrote those comments to look again at your UZi photos...and all are sharper in pop off the screen more. What I did see was the UZi photos did not handle the details of trees and distance objects as well as the E-10.

Have you tried shooting a brightness/contrast target with both the cameras?

I would image the E-10 produces better prints...

Again the images look really clean...it just might be they are too clean for the screen??? I know that sounds odd...but hey its me typing it!! LOL

Still the photos are very well done with a peaceful sense of the spirit of the photographer.

RichO,

That's a great suggestion! I was just thinking how I could measure the adjustments I make in contrast/brightness. Good idea! Now off to find one.

I enjoyed your shots Jim. I especially like the twisted tree shot. I think you re-sizeing idea is great still shows the quality and for me with a dial up line make it a more pleasant viewing experience.

I am looking forward to getting the E-10 providing the test we do turns out ok.

Thanks for sharing. BTW is the bench Teak?

Well Sandman...
You have done it again! Heck, I am going to take my camera back!! :-))

Wonderful gallery...I love the yellow lily shot #98!!! Is that macro??? any close up lense? That is what I am trying for!
Some of the other favorites...# 03, 61, 93, 05 !
Not sure about the resizing...I am not sure what I am looking for/at.

My only comment...and I hope I do not hurt your feelings...Remember...it's only my opinion...I do not like the white borders! They are too big...to me it is very distracting to wonderful shots. My eyes go to the white too much. I would try a little thin one. My 2 cents...remember, you asked!

Jeff S,

THanks for looking and commenting! I think the bench is teak. It sure has aged in the way teak does anyway, with those rich grey tones. Glad the resizing is working for you. I really should have been doing this all along.

Best of luck in your decision to get the E-10. I am enjoying it, but be prepared for a learning curve. I learn so much with every shoot. Thanks to the forum members, I don't feel like I'm all alone in this learning curve. The feedback and helpful hints are beginning to pay off.

Thanks again for your interest.

kim kaila,

LOL! You have to keep your camera, remember? If you give your camera a name, just like a pet, it's staying!

The close-ups are macros, shot using that MCON converter I was telling you about, and all are full-sized images! I can fill the frame and then some with this lens. I'm really not sure how close I can get! I did resize these images for faster downloads, but otherwise what you see is what I got.

THank you for your comment on the frames. I promise I will do more experimentation. I tried a thinner frame, but it didn't work for me. But I have a million more thin frame options to try. I do appreciate your comments on this, and anything else too! This is what I need is honest and supportive suggestions to make my stuff better. I really want it to be as good as I can get it!

Looking forward to more of your stuff!

Juli Valley,

Thanks for looking! Feel free to slap me around some! I can take it. Did you have a fav? What is the "dog" of the show? Go ahead! Make my day! LOL!

Really, I do appreciate your comments. They always mean a lot to me.

I like the resize. Sometimes(sometimes???) I get a bit impatient waiting for things...I even try to read the whole thread before I click on a link. Wish this forum was set up so that all the posts would just scroll on the page instead of having to click the next subject to read it.. anyway...

I love the gallery very calming. The macros are wonderful. KK needs to get that lens.(o: I like the tree shots! my favorite is: http://www.pbase.com/image/2388175
It's just very cozy feeling to me.

Being in GA have you ever gone to Vines Botanical Gardens? I keep meaning to go there but just haven't made it yet and was wondering if it's worth the trip.

Nice work Jim. I'll give comments about what I liked first... :)

The flowers are all quite nice. I especially like PC070891, which is less zoomed in and shows the graceful flow and design of the flower. I also liked the view of 70893. Great shots. I also like some of the bench shots, and the last shot is really nice. The texture and contrast is great. : )

I guess the water pump shots didn't do much for me, but that's just me. Out of them all the water pump shot with the house in the background I liked the most. The other ones lacked the extra visual interest that the house brings in the background. Otherwise, I thought the pump doesn't quite standup on it's own visually. This is just my preferences though Jim. The rest of the tree shots were fine, but didn't have the same visual punch that the last one showed.

Always honest.....Keep up the good work Jimmy boy... ; )

B A H,

I sure appreciate the in-depth critique. I learn so much from your analysis! You gave me my first serious critique many months ago with the cemetery series I did, and you gave me some good pointers on how I can make improvements. I hope you have seen some of your advice put into practice.

Again, thanks for your comments. I was out of town overnight and did not get a chance to see this until now. Best wishes,

jim
