NYC: Chrysler Building

I'm not usually a fan of black and white, probably because I'm so bad
at doing it myself -- I can do it but it's nothing like the work done
by those who are truly experts at it. But that last shot is perfect
just as you did it -- it would have lost something if it were in
color.

Imagine building the Chrysler Building and having the tallest
building in the world as of May 27, 1930. And then imagine just one
year and four days later -- May 31, 1931 -- losing that status to the
Empire State Building, which beat the Chrysler Building by a hair in
height. I wish the Chrysler Building had held its status long enough
for others to realize exactly what a gem it is. Your photos do a lot
to remind us of that. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I've always liked this building. This and the Empire State Building represent the granddaddy of NY skyscrapers.

The conversion on the last one was inspired by the old "Superman" TV shows with George Reeves. I wanted to get that look of the fictional Daily Planet building.

Nice!

One of my favorite buildings anywhere - I'm a huge fan of art deco.

I think a person could spend a couple days just doing a photo study
of this building, inside and out. Even the entrances are way cool.
I agree and thank you!

Dez,

First time posting in your picture threads. Always enjoy pics of NYC from you, rfc, joe, anthony and too many to list. I visited NY twice about 10 years ago and it remains my favorite city. Not sure if I could survive living there but it's a most vibrant place. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Here's what I never have understood about big cities. We all know real estate therein is at a premium. We all know Donald Trump and other slumlords rent out building space by the square inch. Nobody can even afford to park a car.

So why is it that when I visit a large city and walk by these expensive buildings and peek in the windows, I see room after room that that are in obvious disuse? Rooms full of junk, old furniture, empty cardboard boxes.
