Best/safest 40d purchase, please advise

I'm in Sydney and it is frustrating that electrical goods and a variety of other items will not be shipped to Australia. However, I have bought a lot of equipment from Adorama; if I order on a Monday then the item will be in my hands by the Friday. If customs are involved (anything > $AUS1K) then add another 1-2 days. In the past I bought from B&H and had one bad experience, but most people find them great. B&H does have the advantage of a range of shipping options, whereas Adorama uses UPS only and UPS are not great. With B&H the best form of shipping is via Fedex (great tracking, many depots which you can pick up from directly), but this is very expensive. At all costs avoid USPS; you may end up having the item shipped rather than sent via airmail.

There are a lot of Aussies on these forums who poo poo the idea of buying from America; I am always suspicious of their motives. The service from the US companies has been mostly very good, and you can regularly save from 20-40% off the purchase price compared to here. Also the lenses have an international warranty and so you are ok if something goes wrong. Personally I tend to buy refurbished lenses from Adorama and now have four (70-200L 2.8IS, 180Lmacro, 100-400L & 60macro) and all are fantastic and you can save a further 10%. Refurbs are not always available, you just have to keep rechecking the web site. I will admit that I have only bought my SLR cameras here (400D & 40D); I figure that as this is an electroic item, there is a greater risk of something going wrong; although nothing (touch wood) has to date. But, I have bought one P&Ss from the US (Pan Z30); this worked ok, but it was just a piece of rubbish.

Hope this helps
Kind regards
Stephen

um i don't think they do price match as these importers are already operating on very low margins
they rely on high volume sales to make their businesses work
you can try them, nothing ventured nothing gained

I would suggest B & H camera. I have been dealing with them the last three years and have bought three cameras and lots of lens without a drop of trouble. Right now with the canon rebate the 40D which I just bought is $939.00. There shipping is great and always on time. Once or twice I had to return an item and there was no problem at all. I do hope this helps.

With all due respect to our American friends, many of them fail to take into account the shipping cost to Australia, which is often significant. Not to mention the warranty issues.

For my 2c worth, I have purchased a LOT of gear from DigitalRev, and they have always been fantastic with service, shipping and prices. Buy the gear off eBay via their AU store, as you'll save quite a few bucks on what the local guys charge.

For example, I got my 580EX and a CP-E4 for $500AUD delivered. Compare this to the $880 that the local camera shop wanted, and even if I had to pay for return shipping to HK for warranty (I don't), I'm still ahead.

Go with DigitalRev. You won't be disappointed.

'True. You can shoot a Canon with a Nikon ... but it's much more fun shooting a Nikon with a Cannon.'

Well sorry I haven't replied in a few days. It's great that you're getting the 50mm...now the question is if you're tight on your budget get the 50mm F1.8.... you can always resell that later and get the 50mm F1.4 later.... besides at least get the F1.8 for now and wait for the reviews of the Sigma 50mm F1.4 which should be out mid-end of summer. The Canon EF 50mm F1.4 is a good lens, but has some issues with the micro-USM motor breaking down. If you do a search, you'll find quite a bit about it that's why I'm suggesting you to wait for the Sigma 50mm F1.4 which is suppose to have a full HSM motor ring. I would also wait on the reviews of the Sigma 50mm. Anyway, Yeah I still think you should get a the 580ex II too, but note it's tricky and a whole new world shooting with flash and in some situations, best not to use flash, but it's good to have one around. I'm glad you're inspired :)
YOUR A STAR ! Mate i wanna thank you so much, youve been a great
help. I shall try and get the 50mm lens too, i guess if i am going
the whole way i should get the 580 anyway ? What ya think? Youve been
a great inspiration and i loved your photo thanks for sharing.

What state are in? I would not buy the 40D body from overseas as Canon Australia will not honour the warranty. To me it is worth the extra few hundred dollars to be able to walk in to a shop if there is a problem.
Hi everyone, I live in Australia and i would like to buy a 40D Body.
I have a 28-135 IS USM lens to attach. I may be thinking of a second
lens with your help.

Here is the scenario my sister is getting married in July and thank
fully they have a professional photographer. I would take my eos 30
but i cant afford to miss this opportunity on film and the cost of
processing is crazy.

What i am looking for is the best price i can get for purchasing a
40D but also i dont want to go to cheap and find that the shop i buy
it from doesnt support me if it goes wrong or the fact that if i buy
it in Australia and try to claim the tax back at the airport, i dont
want them not to be properly registered.

I am looking to buy a 580ex II as i am sure in the church i am going
to need it, i have seen the chruch when we visited at christmas and
it wasnt very well lit. I dont have alot of money, but i would
consider other peoples advice on a 2nd lens or a new primary lens.

Thank you all for your time.

Regards
Andi

NSW, but the price difference for a canon 40D with 17-85mm IS USM lens $1,454.95 US = $1,523.41 AUD Current price in your local Domayne is $2,200 AUD.

Hi Haykong, i have been weighing up all possibilities, i have in my shopping cart on B&H got the 50mm 1.8 with lens hood, 580ex flash, 3 year extended warranty, and the 40D Body with 28-135 MM lens, although i am seriously wondering if i should get the 17-85mm IS USM kit for an extra $200, what ya think?

That combination is selling here at a pro shop for AUD2009, so you should be able to do much better.

The prices are not especially attractive. For example the 70-200 2.8L IS is listed at $2299; I imported mine from the US for about $1700 and it has international warranty.

faulcon,

As for a hood for the 50mm F1.8, you might consider skipping it since it's such a cheap lens. It's almost 1/4 the cost. Again it's up to you and also the hood I consider is a bit too expensive for a lens of that price, but it's a great little lens for the price. I rather get a hood for the 28-135mm lens with nice filter. But again it's personal preference. Just wish canon bundled the hoods like nikon. As for the 17-85mm, I don't have any personal experience with it, but from what I heard from the reviews you might be a little better off with the 28-135. For that Extra $200 you're spending you better off spending it and getting the new EF-S 18-55mm IS since that's been rated a pretty good lens with it's new design and better than the original 18-55mm. As least, with this you're covering your wide end and getting a little more telephoto with the 28-135mm. I think the 28-135 kit is a great deal now for that lens.

I'm even considering getting another 40D body with that kit lens and was considering giving the lens to my brother down the road when he gets a Rebel Xs(450D)i. It would be a nice gift for him. I already gave my sister my old 10D bundled with the 28-135 lens from one of my 40D kits. Yeah, I can be a nice brother :)

FYI I had both 28-135 and 17-85 for the same price. After comparing the IQ I got rid of 17-85 even though it had a more convenient focus range.
So I would not pay extra $200 for a potentially more mediocre lens.
