I think my Mastercard offers insurance against theft, as does my home insurance. But if (or when!) I drop my camera, what kind of insurance could cover that? Where would you get that?

When my camera was damaged from a fall and needed repair, I called my home insurance company. My agent said that if it were stolen, my homeowner's insurance would cover it, but damage was NOT covered. He didn't say anything about a rider. Maybe I should ask him!!

I think that you can get a "rider" on your home insurance that will
cover your camera.

Mine cost $15 per year for each camera that I have. I am covered under State Farm. You might want to ask if your homeowner's premium will be raised if you file a claim. I forgot to do that. If premiums go up, then it may not be worth it.

Doug:

Penn Camera ( http://penncamera.com/retail.htm ) in the Washington DC area offers a Total Repair Warranty covering 4 years on a purchased E-10. It covers water damage, impact damage, abuse or misuse, and will refund the full selling price if they are unable to repair the covered equipment. (Non-commercial use only.) Obviously, this is of little use to existing camera owners, but should be considered for new buyers.

In addition, many insurance companies offer an "All Risk" policy that runs about $1.50 to $2.50 per $100 of equipment value. Again, non-commercial use only. Commercial rates are considerable higher, but in that case, general liability, workman's comp and so forth can be obtained in a package.

Bob

As others mentioned, a special poicy endorsement can be purchased to cover other "perils" such as dropping the camera, etc.

In addition, I would warn people that have a high priced item, even under standard homeowner's policy for theft, fire, etc., the policy may have limits on a single item. Therefore, one might have to schedule the items, list them separately, on their homeowner's policy just to get basic coverage.

It is best to check before something happens.
