With the price differential now about $550, it's a compelling proposition. Of course everyone is raving (justifiably) about the D300 and many have upgraded from the D200 to the D300, but I wonder if any of you are actually considering buying a D200 now.

Is the D300 $550 better?

$700 or less, yes. But no...since I already own both :)

D300 - Nikon 17-55mm DX f2.8 SB-800
D200 - Nikon 80-200 AF-D f2.8 SB-800
Nikon 50mm f1.8, Nikon 18-35mm f3.5-4.5
D70 - gone!
D100 - gone!

No I own the D300 now, although the D200 could be a good backup to the D300 provided that you also get a MB-D200 battery grip and spare batteries to use as unfortunately the battery life with the D200 is pretty poor and at higher iso's at 800 and above.

At moment the D200 is selling at good price and you get Nikon Capture NX for free and the MB-D200 thrown in not a bad deal.

Alternatively you could wait for the rumoured D90 to come out later this year and make a decision then, with this new camera it should put pressure on the D300 to come down a bit more.

I recently picked up a used D200 and am quite happy with it. I did a lot of research between the 200 and 300. While there are differences, aside from the noise issue, they are quite minor. The MP difference is very small, and if you shoot at lower ISOs, there's very little difference. As you go up in ISO, the difference grows.

I understand focusing is a bit snappier on the D300, which is a good improvement. The LCD is better, but again, not an issue. And live view, though the view finder works quite well also. In my case, I couldn't justify the $700 difference.

I'll likely stick with the 200 until a reasonably priced FF body of the same type is released.

Hi,

I just purchased a D200 - to replace my D70 that stopped working. The D300 is a great camera but I could not afford it. The D200 can be purchased for about $1139 brand new (versus $1700 for a D300) I was looking at a D80 but the difference in price between that and the D200 was not that much .... $440 - and I wanted something that would last (I wore the D70 I had out .... I may send it in for repair and use it as a backup.)

If I had the extra 800/900 for a used one, I would..
People are dumping the D200 with 1000 or less than 10K shutter for 800-1000.

I think the D200 still takes wonderful pics..

I just picked one up...traded in a D50 and a few lenses that were not being used...cost me $230 after it was all said and done...

Yes, oh yes.

Objectively at least 1 1/2 stops better, subjectively about 2 1/2 stops better due to better color rendition.

I've shot ISO 3200 in basketball that look fantastic off the D300, where ISO 800 on the 200 looks just tolerable. (and ISO 1600 is embarassing)

And from all of those who say "well if you just expose properly you won't have problems" I say, just try to shoot indoor basketball at some poorly lit high school and do that.
I'm sorry if this has been beaten to death (and I know it has), but
for those of you who have actually used both a D200 and D300, is the
high ISO noise very significantly different? Thanks.

Very helpful, thanks.

It's interesting to note the signfiicant price advantage the Canon 40D has now given their recent instant rebates. 40Ds can be had close to $900. I would think that that might put some downward pressure on the D300s (and remaining D200s). Or alternatively, perhaps the market will bare that kind of differential showing how much more of a compelling package the D300 is.

I'm getting close to springing for the D300...

I just picked up a D200, will eventually snag the D300, but not until after my deployment.

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about the D200, but I am seriously impressed with both the image quality and build quality.

Here is a deal that will narrow the price gap, When Best Buy has their 12% off reward coupons for instore items only, call 1-800-best-buy and tell them you would like to use the coupon on the body only. They will except it over the phone. I just did it over the weekend and got it for $1584 +tax with free shipping, 18 month free financing using the Best Buy card and $30 in reward coupons. they give 14 days to return in store with no restock charge if you have a problem or dont like it. Best deal I've seen!!

Here is the catch, Best Buy is going to discontinue selling the D300. the sales guy in the store verified it so this deal wont be around long.
I should have mine by Thursday. I can't wait!!

And I say if you can't capture colors accurately, who cares about Low-light performance? Yes, the D300 has great high ISO capabilities...and also makes pictures that look very digital. And forget the color Blue...on the D300 it's Flourescent blue.

Enjoy your new technology!

I am!

If this looks very digital, then I'm glad it does. (An admittedly pedestrian football shot) I know doesn't look great in gory detail, but zoomed out and also printed looks fine, and much better than the D200 in the same place. (I have those somewhere too)
