Latest Field Report from Olympus UKPSG...

but visiting the Antwerp Harbour ("and I can probably get us inside someplace interesting...") was one of the little ideas I pitched to you in an e-mail, already a long time ago when first contemplating organizing an event in Belgium...

As for more shots : first I need to finish tons of real work this week, and then I hope to find time to sort through images and upload a couple to my Zenfolio, from where I will post them around here someplace...

In the meantime, maybe I will upload one or two sooner than you think...

UKPSG presents a Tunisia E-3 user field report: http://www.biofos.com/ukpsg/roel.html

Let's consider that an excellent scouting trip Roel... it shouldn't be difficult to enthuse enough Safari Group members to make it a target event!

Well Done, and thanks for sharing an inspirational location :)

Damn it Roel, you're making this lens look indispensible! lol

...and my 14-150mm OIS hasn't even arrived yet! I can see this is going to be an expensive month ;)

Should it not be the purpose to focus on the equipment and the
experience with the equipment?
The purpose is to inspire people to get out and enjoy using their
Olympus gear, rather than focusing too much on dry technical specs
and features... we're looking to provide some real world experience
based opinion here - a bit rough and ready, but hopefully worth
reading.
I enjoyed the entire read, and have shared it with others -- no worries there.
For example, in your piece Brian, I would have had the the title
something like, "My day with the Olympus 150mm f2 lens" instead of
"Brian Mosley" -- no offense Brian, but a by line makes more sense
unless the point is to promote the author. Most who may come upon
your sight may not know "Brian Mosley" but they may be searching for
Oly equipment.
Personally, I think the anonymity of the internet (Pedal2Floor) can
sometimes cause people to dehumanise the contributions of real
people, with real names. I'm keen to recognise the Safari Group
members who have freely given their time, effort and contribution to
these events...
Just a note, the Internet sometimes requires anonymity. Some of us because of the way we are employed, need to hide from search engines otherwise we could get fired or potentially not hired because background checks also now include looking at the internet for what you may or may not have said in the past.

That said, I agree with your intent and for giving credit where it is due.
None of us are professional reviewers or writers... but we'll
hopefully improve by taking your constructive comments to heart - and
I know that we have some new, talented members contributing to the
Whitby event which will be a interesting reading.
All I am suggesting is something like

"My day with the Olympus 150mm f2 -- Brian Mosley" Or, " I go galloping with with the 150 f2 -- By Brian Mosley"

The subject and the author are given equal prominence and weight by being on the same line plus the reader can choose which article to read first based on the subject. The titles can have color provided by clever use of words.
It should be structured more like a magazine IMHO. The contents
listing should be the equipment reviewed. Each reviewer should then
get a by line.
I've got three magazines I've bought in the last couple of weeks...
which I haven't read yet! I prefer to read real stories from normal
people - my eyes tend to gloss over when I read yet another
professional review - at least dpreview's efforts have lots of
pictures ;)
Color, content, font size and picture size are great.
Thank you - great to read the stuff that's working too!
I refuse to download the activeX control. I don't want another
stinking piece of software on my computer to view images. There are
literally hundreds of viewers, I don't want one more. I suggest
Adobe Flash, Flex or Apple QuickTime or Microsoft Silverlight -- all
cross platform, all probably residing on everyones computer already.
Worst case, there is software that will make slide shows without
needing a control.
I spent a few hours yesterday looking at Flash - but the Proshow Gold
software includes a free server account to host the slideshows... I
completely sympathise about the activeX control - and will continue
to look for a more general solution that works. Your feedback above
is greatfully accepted.

I'll look at flex and silverlight - I hope they are Mac friendly?
Yes, both Mac friendly
I will not be viewing the images if I have to download the control
I'm sorry for any frustration this has caused - there are
illustrations in the article, and more images hosted from the event
here, including shooting parameters :

Thanks again, for looking and for your comments - much appreciated!

Kind Regards

I'd like to organise a Photo Safari event around an airshow... do you have any recommendations / pointers to resources for info on what's available?

I'd love to see the Vulcan... is it going to fly any time soon?

Please see my reply to Ben below.

Also, we have an 'Events Highlights' gallery on our coordination
website here.
Excellent. Very nice work all around. I can only imagine how many shots everybody had to select from, so trimming the list to 18 is quite an achievement! Cheers,

The Vulcan is a bit sketchy on when its actually going to do an airshow, I think my bro has some idea when it's supposed to fly so I'll ask him tomorrow, but the way the project is going i wouldn't take anything as definite right now, but very soon we all hope :)

The Shuttleworth collection is a personal favourite of mine very old aircraft, sometimes 3 or 4 planes in the the air at a time, http://www.shuttleworth.org/

Riat Fairford is excellent just because you get so much variety there,we usually stand in a small field (for a small fee) to the north of the runway, but it is totally lacking in facilities and the aircraft often pass lowish and very noisily directly over you, but you get shots from the opposite side to every one else

Personally i would take into account the type of aircraft you want to see, and work around that, here is a list to work through showing lots of events http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/shows/showdate.htm

Now that would be worth seeing!

Thank you for the pointers - I'll add it to our list of future destinations... it all depends on Group members' interests, availability & location at the moment - but pretty soon we'll have enough people to carry an event to anywhere in the UK!

Kind Regards

Also, we now have the kind assistance of fellow Safari Group member Dave Bennett, who is a Welsh Photographic Federation judge... so we'll be getting some valuable guidance for our work. Very exciting to be moving our photography forward in the group!

Thanks for looking Mike, glad you like them so far!

yeah this is the problem, it was supposed to be at Cosford this Sunday but it looks like a definite no show, the only concrete appearance seems to be Waddington in July, but if you check on the Vulcan homepage absolutely no details about this, confusion reigns concerning this aircraft and it's flying future right now :(

well when it does fly i hope to see you there, it's been a very long time since i saw a Vulcan fly, when I was a lad they use to pass quite low over the house so i hope my memories won't be disappointed. Anything concrete i hear i will let you know :)

For ZERO experience those are pretty darned good!

(My only quibble would be to go for a slightly lower shutter speed so that the planes are sharp and the props slightly blurred ... )

When I saw one shot I couldn't help thinking of a recent news release from the amazon:

(I'll correct the attribution if you let me know whose shot it was).

...and thanks for the blurred propellor advice - that's something I'll remember for the next time I'm shooting aircraft like this.

It's been interesting to see a number of (IMHO not as good) images printed in local press, sourced by 'conventional' camera users! I think that we'll be looking for agents to help place future efforts by Safari Group members in paid publications... this could be a great boost for our Safari Group members' confidence & equipment fund! LOL

Kind Regards

same Lanc was at Cosford on Sunday, but the conditions were dreadful for aircraft shooting, the only way to get a decent image was converting to B&W.
Still nothing new on the Vulcan Brian!
