Latest Field Report from Olympus UKPSG...

Hi Pedal2Floor,
Should it not be the purpose to focus on the equipment and the
experience with the equipment?
The purpose is to inspire people to get out and enjoy using their Olympus gear, rather than focusing too much on dry technical specs and features... we're looking to provide some real world experience based opinion here - a bit rough and ready, but hopefully worth reading.
For example, in your piece Brian, I would have had the the title
something like, "My day with the Olympus 150mm f2 lens" instead of
"Brian Mosley" -- no offense Brian, but a by line makes more sense
unless the point is to promote the author. Most who may come upon
your sight may not know "Brian Mosley" but they may be searching for
Oly equipment.
Personally, I think the anonymity of the internet (Pedal2Floor) can sometimes cause people to dehumanise the contributions of real people, with real names. I'm keen to recognise the Safari Group members who have freely given their time, effort and contribution to these events...

None of us are professional reviewers or writers... but we'll hopefully improve by taking your constructive comments to heart - and I know that we have some new, talented members contributing to the Whitby event which will be a interesting reading.
It should be structured more like a magazine IMHO. The contents
listing should be the equipment reviewed. Each reviewer should then
get a by line.
I've got three magazines I've bought in the last couple of weeks... which I haven't read yet! I prefer to read real stories from normal people - my eyes tend to gloss over when I read yet another professional review - at least dpreview's efforts have lots of pictures ;)
Color, content, font size and picture size are great.
Thank you - great to read the stuff that's working too!
I refuse to download the activeX control. I don't want another
stinking piece of software on my computer to view images. There are
literally hundreds of viewers, I don't want one more. I suggest
Adobe Flash, Flex or Apple QuickTime or Microsoft Silverlight -- all
cross platform, all probably residing on everyones computer already.
Worst case, there is software that will make slide shows without
needing a control.
I spent a few hours yesterday looking at Flash - but the Proshow Gold software includes a free server account to host the slideshows... I completely sympathise about the activeX control - and will continue to look for a more general solution that works. Your feedback above is greatfully accepted.

I'll look at flex and silverlight - I hope they are Mac friendly?
I will not be viewing the images if I have to download the control
I'm sorry for any frustration this has caused - there are illustrations in the article, and more images hosted from the event here, including shooting parameters :

Thanks again, for looking and for your comments - much appreciated!

Hi Andrew,
An interesting and enjoyable read. I liked the chatty reports of the
photographers, although they could be a bit more pithy... still... I
guess you're photographers, not writers, so that's fine.
I'm sure we will improve with practice, and thank you for your encouragement :)
I would like to see smaller sample shots, with basic info under each.
Camera, lens, ISO, f-stop, etc.
Check out our Event Highlights galleries for sample shots including basic info here :
http://ukpsg.squarespace.com/event-highlights/
I found the gallery viewer ActiveX thing really very annoying. It
didn't really allow me to get a good look at the shots at all, and it
just annoys me when someone expects me to download something or other
just so I can look at their website. Why not include smaller
galleries of a grid of thumnails, each of which clicks through to a
page on Flickr or some other photo hosting site? That way we can
choose which shots we want to see, and look at all the EXIF info if
we wish to.
Every time someone complains, I get more motivated to find a better solution... so thanks, but I'm trying to find something which will wrap up the collections into a simple presentation. It also needs to be widely compatible.
The photo-safari idea is great. Anyone wanna do it in Vilnius?
Maybe we can inspire a worldwide network of passionate Olympus shooters - interested in getting out to learn with and from other Oly shooters in the field... please feel free to e-mail me, and I'll be happy to add you to our International membership!

Kind Regards

Hi Jerry,
Thank you for providing this Brian.
You're welcome, I'm glad it's of interest/value...
I agree with some of the other posts about adding photo details and
perhaps specific statements about an image but realise the work that
would need to go into this. In many respects it up to us to
contribute what works, if the requirements are too strict then few
will contribute. The style is that of the individuals as well as the
coordinator.
You are so right, it's a balance and I think we're heading in the right direction - but it's essential that everyone in the team gets recognition... this is a TEAM effort!
I found it a useful read of an event that sadly I missed, I really
like to see personal/practical reviews of lenses and other kit is
always good to read and the tips are valuable (eg. Brian/Paul’s:
spray and lack of IS when against the sun), but there is probably
even more in the way of tips that were discussed at Chatsworth (I
wish I was there), the safaris are probably the place to absorb ideas
– as if by osmosis! The review is a fair form of a synopsis.
Bingo! you got it right Jerry - the follow up reports are really only a tiny summary of everything we're experiencing... great friendships are being formed, and we're learning a huge amount with and from each other!

I hope that you will join us for an event soon.

Kind Regards

Brian

But hiked up to Bamford Edge at 4.40am with fellow Safari Group member Stephen Elliott to shoot the Dambusters flyby... did you get up for this Gregg?

I've uploaded our shots to the Event Highlights gallery here :
http://ukpsg.squarespace.com/event-highlights/may-2008-dambuster-flyby/

Here's my favourite of my set (the second 7 shots)... the light was quite challenging, but the subject was enthralling!

unfortunately i just couldn't make it, some lovely shots in the gallery, i particularly like the shots from above, very unusual angle but stunning nonetheless. So many great events right now but between work and the weather i am finding it difficult to find time to get out much.

thanks for looking... we planned the spot carefully - even arriving 5 hrs before the shoot, to go for a sunrise and to ensure we had the very best vantage point... which it was!

We were particularly keen to get the aircraft 'in-context' - i.e. with the dam and surrounding countryside a part of the shots - otherwise they could have been taken at any airshow.

I just wish we'd had better light... but I wouldn't have missed it!

Kind Regards

Just a suggestion: JAlbum. This is based on java, works therefore on all platforms. No need to download any plug-in to view it. There is also a free hosting..... find out at jalbum.net.

well you have to make the best of the conditions you have, but i agree a good scout about usually can make a big difference, i took the following shot from the top of grassy bank yesterday, unfortunately as the lighting taxied past the jet washed knocked a couple of guys over lol, the grain in the picture is from the sheer weight of rainfall

taken with a Fuji S2 and sigma 70-200mm/2.8, the Lighting 's performance still surpasses many fighter aircraft of today, absolutely awesome standing so close to something so brutal

Is the Lightning the aircraft that can go into a vertical climb & performs like a rocket?

You certainly captured the power there! How did you keep the Fuji dry?

Cheers

yes that's the same aircraft, unfortunately its not allowed to fly, the power of the engines and the noise was extreme, it actually lifted onto 2 wheels as shot away. The Fuji got pretty wet but being an old old camera its pretty durable, quick towel off in the car and it was fine.

Well of course my particular effort was a one-author piece (so no need for more namedropping, although I must say that Brian and John were VERY helpful in getting the content online), but in the Tunisia firld report, we did just that :

slapping a list of equipment "chapters" on the front of the article, with links to take you to relevant parts immediately.

I was extremely busy the past days, so that explains why I was a little slow on the ball here : I hadn't seen your announcement of three days ago.

I had read through some "work in progress" on the coordination site, but the end result is always so much more pleasing to the eye to read.

Again very nice work, Brian and others.
Also thanks to John Foster.

...and really do reflect the personality / skill level of the respective contributors - Roel's report is a good example of that, Roel has an excellent attention to detail, and really put a great deal of effort into it... which is why I've asked him to do more for us in the future!

We will also arrange a number of events in Europe next year... as the group numbers provide enough people with an interest/availability.

Kind Regards

I mean with rubbing it in that I can't ever come...
I did indeed love many of those Whitby shots I saw in sneak previews.

But I must say those Chatsworth action shooting opportunities looked also extremely appealing.

At that shipyard you visited recently! it looked absolutely fantastic... the only trouble is, I would have had to buy a 7-14 in preparation! lol

When are we going to see more shots Roel?
