gee i am suprised someone dare to poke the fire for a nikon cannon debate haha

i am sure if you have a pro slr and a top end flash then you will be fine except for prementioned user error, saying that thought i had a friend with d60 that couldnt get reliable closeup shots using ttl with a macro flash !! , maybe user error as new camera ??

Ok the problem with these arguements is that I am a looooong time Nikon user and a present F5 user. I know for instance that when I use the F5 with the SB26 out doors for close ups is normal ambient light under shade I go down -3 to -.7 of the flash unit and I get great results. The camera is being used on the matrix setting and in the (dummy mode "P"). The exposure's are perfect. Now if I try that with the D1x and the SB 80 DX - or just leave the flash do it's own thing on Matrix DX I get over exposure. I either have to go to full manual on the camera and work with the meter or go 1/3 to 2/3 (or more!) a stop below on the camera. Otherwise everything is washed out. I have nor apparent problems in doors except for maybe a slight bit of under exposure (all of this done leaving the flash and camera on full program) which is bareable and correctable! I tried out the Canon at the show here in NY and somehow (at least while looking at that tiny screen) ecerything looked absolutly perfectly exposed. And hey you guys oth there I am a real Nikon person and I have alwyas believed Nikon full strengths lay in it's exposure programing. (Whereas Canon in it's auto focus). But heck I am having problems and I have had the camera checked and tweaked by Nikon a few times already. Usually it works fine after I get it back but then starts slipping up again. But if i meter everything in a studio situation with flash heads etc. the exposure is great. So is this a digital thing???How come I have no problems with my F5 and F100?

If Canon's strength is in AF, what in the heck did they do to the D30?

Point well taken. but remember, my experiance lies mostly in the 35mm arena, like the EOS 1V , EOS 3 etc! I don't think I have ever even had the D30 in my hands.I do admire the fast (basically instantaneous) and quiet auto focus on the 35mm line of Canon.

Yes, those were the higher-end Canon 35mm's. From my understanding, and what I've read on it, I don't think Canon used those AF system designs in the D30.....it was patterned after thier lesser cams. Nice to include such a feature IMO in a digital cam that originally cost well over 2K!!

Anyway, I'm sorry I can't help out much on your original question, I lack the experience with off-board flash on my own DSLR (still use the built in sadly). Just thought I'd pop my tidbit of useless babble in anyway....

Well at least someone raised up their tired head to pay attention to my "Canon versus Nikon" question. I suspect though without allowing loyalties (and habits may I add) to any one brand to interfere, there may actually be some substance to my question. Something is going on and I very well believe it is a digital issue as i just used the SB 80 Dx with my F5 outdoors on a shoot with terrific results. As a matter of fact the flash is loads better then the SB 26 that I always adored! It's easy to say it's "pilot" error but this pilot has been shooting professionally 35mm and medium format for 25 years! And .............I shoot 100+ weddings a year so I do know my equipment!

Erika, thought you might find this article interesting. In it, Patterson in the beginning makes a similar observation.

Thanks I read the link. I notice there are no "contact me" links on his site. Would you know if I could email him a question?
Thanks!!!

Hi again Erika

Unfortunately, I don't think you can. He adamantly states that he no longer responds to e-mail requests for info on his home-page:

http://www.moose395.net/

Too bad.

Try a Google search perhaps for someone else who may be equally experienced, that's the only thing I could suggest.
Good luck and happy shooting,
D.

Excellent post.

Also quite impressive, to say the least, that you created your own design, and further were willing to give it away(I don't think I could have been so generous, even if I were endowed with such talent!) in order to see a product you desire.

Seems so far your only response to the issue is a somewhat defeated agreement to the problem and that's it. I hope you find a more satisfactory answer soon.
Sorry again I can't be of any help either in that regard.
Thanks for replying.

Erika, I sent an e-mail to the webmaster there, and he mailed me
back almost immediately advising me to post questions in the Photo
tools forum at this link:

http://www.nikondigital.org/discuss/ubbthreads.php

Hope that helps. Moose isa moderator at several of them.
Good luck.
