I want to join the NPS. I see that they need a letter asking for an invitation to join. They also mention that I need a sponsor to sign the form. Is this after I send the letter and after they accept me?

Would someone be willing to sign a sponsorship for me?

Thanks,

Steve

If you have tear sheets or other such evidence that you can send to them that shows that you are a pro, they sometimes wave the signature requirement.

In my case I had to provide a list of equipment including professional bodies and lenses - they have a minimum requirement.

And I also had to send them my client list. My NPS is free for two years.

I just sent them an email with a note about the work we're doing, a list of the Nikon (and other) equipment and attached two recent ads we have run. Any idea what the minimum equipment would be? I use a D1X and have 5 Nikkor lenses. I also mentioned the Hassy stuff.

I have a problem with sending client lists. I consider that confidential info. I would want to get permission from each before releasing it and that would be a pain!

Do you happen to have a phone number that I can reach NPS at? Thanks!

NPS isn't all that great...its rare they have a lens in stock that you need.

Why don't you just send a couple copies of tearsheets? They don't need a very specific client list. It's not like they are going to call them for a reference.

Ads that you have run are ok, but work you did for other people is what they want to verify your professional status.

I think I still have an active NPS account, although I switched to Canon about 7 years ago. They kept sending me cards.

Although the (NPS and CPS) might not have the thing you want in stock at all times, the really good part of membership is the expedited repair service- 3 days max.

Are'nt tearsheets primarily used by models and the like? Does a photographer necessarily absolutely need this to prove she/he is a pro? Don't many pros do work that really never gets published, such as wedding and portraiture work? Are these sorts of photographers not looked upon as professionals because thier work does not include supplying images for circulation?

After I sent my note and ads, I received an email back asking for my full mailing address. I guess they accepted what I sent.

SR,

They got your mailing address to send you a form to fill out, not an automatic acceptance. In general, i believe they require a membership in a professional organization (e.g. APA, ASMP), proof that you are staff for a magazine (i.e. name on the masthead) or if freelance they require recent tearsheets (tearsheets are quite common in portfolios for photographers), and usually a current member to sponsor you. They loan out cameras to members, so they do a lot of checking, and NPS isn't just for anyone.

Thanks Tony! I am a member of PPA and ASMP. I told them in my email. Also, they called one of my local suppliers for a reference. Hmmm....
