Hello everyone,

as you may know, we've been developing an active organisation of serious Olympus shooters here in the UK over the last few months - we have been getting ourselves more organised, to bring you our experience of using Olympus kit in real world, challenging situations.

I am delighted to bring news of our latest field report, which has been generously hosted by John Foster, of biofos here :

http://www.biofos.com/ukpsg/chatsworth.html

We would appreciate your feedback and opinions on the format and content of the article - so that we can improve the quality of the next articles in production.

Also, if you would like to be included in the planning/announcements of future events, please feel free to e-mail me via my profile, or the address below.

Kind Regards

Brian

That no-one has commented on the report... there's a lot of tips and real-life experience wrapped up in the article, by some talented Olympus shooters. Has anyone taken a look yet?

We would greatly appreciate your C&C, to make sure that the reports being prepared now are better still!

Kind Regards

Whenever I go to your webpage there, I am told that I need a missing plug-in - one that allows me to view the slideshow at the bottom of the page. But it never tells me what the plug-in is (I'm using Firefox). At the bottom - in the absence of the slideshow - there's a link in the white square that says "download plug-in here." But when I click on it, it takes me nowhere. Would love to download the plug-in wherever it is.

I always enjoy going to that site to see what's new with "youse guys," especially the photos...but alas, I need that plugin!

As always - good shooting....

Same problem here. I like the samples shown in the body of the report, and the commentary is interesting, but the main body of photos is, alas, inaccessible to me.

We're looking for a Mac compatible option at the moment, but in the meantime we're using Proshow Gold, from photodex. You can download the plugin here :

I'll suggest that John includes a link on his site.

Thanks Brian, as always a good read. Unfortunately just a touch too far to travel to your events from Tassie, but always enjoy and look forward to the write ups.

Best of luck as you streamline that process.

The Whitby report is looking even better! I can't wait to have it published...

as for the Leopard Event, and the Parrot Sanctuary Event... they will take longer to complete, it's unfortunate that they will be published in reverse order!

I'm glad that you're finding them worthwhile - we're enjoying creating them - and although there is a lot of recognition for my efforts from the group members, I feel privileged to be working with a great team of Oly shooters. I'm learning a lot from being around these people!

Kind Regards

Kudos to you Brian for great organisation for a splendid event, great report, it looked a fantastic day out, i would of commented earlier but I've been standing in a muddy field all day listening to jet engines

I'd hate to think you got all muddy for nothing!

And it's been worth the effort... for the chance to learn from some great Oly shooters, and make lots of new friends.

And we're only just getting started!

Kind Regards

The formatting used at biofos is OK. Reading is easy as the size and colors are all pleasing at a first glance. Personally I would prefer a grey background as it is more neutral and make the pictures stand out better.

I didn't read it all word by word so the following comment is to be taken fwiw:

I would have liked to see a better introduction. Now I wasn't sure I was interested in reading the whole piece or not as I didn't know why it was written. Were you there to test a new camera, or for having a nice day together? I guess the later judging from the two "member reports" I read.

To me it is always of interest to know why something is written = why am I reading this. It makes it easier to skim through looking for the parts I don't want to miss.

thank you,

went down to Bruntingthorpe and i hope i got a nice English Electric Lightning on full reheat e.t.c. but with a Fuji S2 and Sigma 70-200mm/2.8, the endless messing about with the Vulcan was to be frank disappointing, but despite the endless heavy rain a fun day out............mainly due to the Mad professor.

This is exactly the kind of feedback we need - I will think about improving the intro, and certainly give the next reports a better introduction.

Each of these events give us a chance to learn something new, share ideas and meet new Safari Group members in person, which is very important to us. We also get a chance to try a whole range of lenses and bodies we don't yet own... and share our opinion of shooting with that kit in our experience reports.

These are more like diaries of the day, with tips and experience shared throughout.

What I really want to do, is have more non-Olympus photographers get to learn how well Olympus kit serves us in a wide variety of real world, challenging situations. We need to find more, independent outlets for these articles as our group grows.

We also need more members to help us scout out new locations for future events!

Kind Regards

Brian

... photos, and an interesting concept. Look forward to the next installment.

Brian, I need a photo vest for a couple summer concerts upcoming. Wondered if you could share a link to the Olympus photo vest if you know of one. I tried Emporium but they don't seem to have the item listed.
Thanks in advance,

Doug B

Should it not be the purpose to focus on the equipment and the experience with the equipment?

For example, in your piece Brian, I would have had the the title something like, "My day with the Olympus 150mm f2 lens" instead of "Brian Mosley" -- no offense Brian, but a by line makes more sense unless the point is to promote the author. Most who may come upon your sight may not know "Brian Mosley" but they may be searching for Oly equipment.

It should be structured more like a magazine IMHO. The contents listing should be the equipment reviewed. Each reviewer should then get a by line.

Color, content, font size and picture size are great.

I refuse to download the activeX control. I don't want another stinking piece of software on my computer to view images. There are literally hundreds of viewers, I don't want one more. I suggest Adobe Flash, Flex or Apple QuickTime or Microsoft Silverlight -- all cross platform, all probably residing on everyones computer already. Worst case, there is software that will make slide shows without needing a control.

I will not be viewing the images if I have to download the control

After reading each writer's field report, I must say I like
  • The "free", narrative format as written by each user for I get a small glimpse of the photographer's "character" during the photo shoot. I prefer this free, "unformatted" narration vs. a "fill-in the topic" type of report because I'm guessing the writer/photographer will write whatever they were most impressed/unimpressed with. Sure, this free narration can have its issues, but I still would preffer it as currently is.
  • There is a plethora of web-based information with clustered charts, numbers and photos disected to a level so granular than I can almost see the electrons that made by binary immage possible! That type of info has its benefits, no doubt, but the field report offers something way more "tangible", "real-life" scenarios and experiences of photographers taking photos. That I think is the best part of the report.
A few things that I would like to see
  • This may seem to contradict my first paragraph above - augment the free narration with a summary of (1.) likes, (2.) dislikes, (3.) challenges, (4.) tips, (5.) etc., that each photographer/writer feels like mentioning - if at all. Following the narration, this would summarize some of the tidbits. And these could be in the realm of photographic gear, technique, etc.
  • If available, show me a "bad/poor/incomplete" photo and describe what went wrong: was it hardware limitation, poorly planned, technique, blah-blah-blah, so I can learn something that way as well.
Suffice it to say I enjoyed reading the field report and looking froward to the next one! I appreciate the effort of all those involved (naaahh... I'm sure they're having fun!) ;)

An interesting and enjoyable read. I liked the chatty reports of the photographers, although they could be a bit more pithy... still... I guess you're photographers, not writers, so that's fine.

I would like to see smaller sample shots, with basic info under each. Camera, lens, ISO, f-stop, etc.

I found the gallery viewer ActiveX thing really very annoying. It didn't really allow me to get a good look at the shots at all, and it just annoys me when someone expects me to download something or other just so I can look at their website. Why not include smaller galleries of a grid of thumnails, each of which clicks through to a page on Flickr or some other photo hosting site? That way we can choose which shots we want to see, and look at all the EXIF info if we wish to.

The photo-safari idea is great. Anyone wanna do it in Vilnius?

Thank you for providing this Brian.

I agree with some of the other posts about adding photo details and perhaps specific statements about an image but realise the work that would need to go into this. In many respects it up to us to contribute what works, if the requirements are too strict then few will contribute. The style is that of the individuals as well as the coordinator.

I found it a useful read of an event that sadly I missed, I really like to see personal/practical reviews of lenses and other kit is always good to read and the tips are valuable (eg. Brian/Paul’s: spray and lack of IS when against the sun), but there is probably even more in the way of tips that were discussed at Chatsworth (I wish I was there), the safaris are probably the place to absorb ideas – as if by osmosis! The review is a fair form of a synopsis.

Apparently, this limited edition (only 7000 made) was on sale for £49.99 from Warehouse Express for a time, but I think they must have sold out.

I have negotiated an exclusive supply, as a free gift to new Safari Group members as they attend our events in the UK - while stocks last ;)

If anyone would like a free vest, simply drop me an e-mail to be included in the planning and announcements of all future Safari Group events.

Kind Regards
