Reputable Online Store

The two that seem to get the best reviews over time are B&H and Adorama.

I like Adorama because I prefer their website as easier to navigate than B&H. Both have exemplary reputations, and I have the highest confidence in either one.

There are other stores that have been good for people, but these two always seem to stand out.

If you have questions concerning a store, check them out at resellerratings.com.

B&H has a Platinum Plus rating and Adorama has a gold rating.

I will check the sites that has been suggested.

I was also looking at Razzphoto and Shopcartusa. I need to check if they are reliable stores too.

Thank you all.

I have bought lots things off the internet for years - all kinds of things from all parts of the world, except cameras.

I bought my D40X kit from Sunshine Electronics out of NYC, NY. IMO, it was a mistake. I was sold a "grey market" camera w/o any for notice of what I was getting. Grey market is not stolen, but (according to NikonUSA) is sold in a way that they do not pay traiffs.

I was not aware of this until I tried to register it with NikonUSA - can not do it. They won't even support it. I got a warranty, but it's through a 3rd party. I don't believe that the store misrepresented the product, just left off some fairly vital information. I am still trying to find out how I will get firmware upgrades should there be one - the store will not answer my queries.

Bottom line, be sure, no matter where you buy it that the camera is totally supported in the US.

You get firware upgrades from Nikon's website. You have no need to have the camera registered to download the firware update

Grey market imports are fairly well known. For example B & H have both grey market and Nikon US cams etc on their site. I am sorry to hear you did not know. It will only be a problem in the unlikely event that you need to make a warranty claim.

Thanks for the info Chris.

I don't really expect there to be a problem - Like you said; "...in the unlikely event you need to make a warranty claim." - I agree. I have a couple Coolpix and have used them and beat them to death and they keep right on working fine. And there are no firmware upgrades to the D40X yet - I did see the B&H ads after the fact and they distinguished the two (grey/US) - That's where I'll go for any additional purchases.

B&H does not sell gray market cameras, only lenses and other
accessories.
That's what I thought, until Henry Posner corrected me. B&H does sell some gray market film cameras (which I presume are marked as such).

As far as I know, all of their new digital SLR bodies have USA warranties.

Interesting, Henry was the person that posted on DPR a few months ago that B&H does not sell gray market cameras. The thread was probably along the lines of digital bodies.

Never heard of RAzzphoto, but Shopcartusa is a fake site set up by the scammers.

Nevermind, I looked up Razzphoto and they're one of the Express Camera scammers it looks like.

Chris~

Here is the response I received from Nikon USA with regards to getting firmware upgrades...

"Many software products for our digital products are often available online through the Nikon Knowledge Database at our web site, http://www.nikonusa.com , and often do not require your serial number for download. Firmware upgrades and repair service, if necessary, do require serial numbers, and Nikon USA would not be able to provide service in these matters for gray market items. There may be independent repair facilities in your area that could assist you. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause."

In other words I'm hosed for upgrades. Like I said, be careful what you are buying.
