Leica 14-150 examples!

Hi Andrew!

I'm afraid I fell for another lens ...!

BUT I've sold several camera bodies / kits and lenses, so don't feel so bad about it.

As its so compact & light I really wanted to try this lens out myself. So far its proving to be excellent. Slow at full zoom of course, but with IS and maybe a monopod in really low light its not really a problem.

I've dusted off the E330, sold the E510, and so that camera might start being used a lot again - fits in a small bag. I've a longish trip to Brittany coming up on Monday and have to fly - so might take the E330 + 14-150 and nothing more!

A one lens trip should be a good exercise!
Hi Rich looks like another fine lens you have there. I like the shot
of the leaf.
Do you have a camera designated for this ?

great set of shots
All the best

VERY NICE! Has a 14-50 leica feel to the images. I guess we can officially say the color and bokeh reproduction we're seeing is a trait!

Brian - after you take it through its paces, you won't have any doubts - an awesome combo on the E420!

Just look at it as if you're buying a set of SIX Leica primes.
Bargain!

The Leica colour just shines through and through ....
You've just cost me several hundred pounds! lol

Well Done Rich, can't wait to see how it performs on the E-420
tomorrow...

Kind Regards

No point in trying to describe Leica colour is there!
Its just there in all its richness and smoothness ....

And this lens is six or seven Leica primes in one!

Maybe that's being a bit excessive, and I need to spend time at al focal lengths before getting too excited ...

Hi Lance

Thanks for your comments!

I'll do some ZD 12-60 v Leica 14-150 comparisons soon. Its very interesting how each lens renders an image.

Leica colour is highly seductive ..!
Love it. But all of them have a richness to them. Makes me what it.

I think you are absolutely right Godfrey.

I've have used a few superzooms in my time as well, but I can't recall any that had the sheer quality of this one in terms of rendering. There's something sumptious about the colour and tone as well.
Very nice, Rich. Certainly looks like one of the better 10:1 zooms
I've seen in terms of rendering qualities.

Hi Claus!

Many thanks for the kind comments.
Landscape and street shots coming up tomorrow!

I'm sure this lens will be a huge success for Panny / Leica. At last a superzoom that gives quality of image on 4/3 that we can be pleased with.
Rich,

the second and third are outstanding, and I like all. Seems to be a
good lens, though it's a super-zoom.

I'd much appreciate to see some scenes farer away, if you'd be so kind.

Thanks, and good photographer, good gear!

All best,

Claus.

Hi

I still have the kit 40-150, so would be happy to do some comparison tests against the 14-150 OIS.

Different scenes tomorrow that should show us how versatile this lens is.
More tomorrow.
Great. Thoughts on the usefulness of the OIS and the quality of the
telephoto end in comparison to the kit 40-150 would also be
appreciated. Cheers,

14-150's a good range for a travel kit.

18-180's much too narrow at the short end, and the lack of IS starts to show at the long end.

Definitely knocks the socks off the 18-180, though you don't have any flare/glare examples.

Hi Rich,

As you have the lot (almost) of the best Olympus lenses and as a person just about to buy some more, specifically for portraits and natural light + portrais with studio strobes.

If you had one choice would you choose either the:

35-100

14-150 leica

Or maybe for the price of the 35-100 you could get the two leicas, just wondering about any CA negatives that people have talked about.

I already have the 14-54, 50 Macro and the old 50-200.

I was set on the 35-200, but given the weight and size wondering if the Leica's with IS are almost as good, also as you say the look & feel of the Leica gives an image a different look.

not bad at all. btw, that top shot is really excellent, the best of the bunch.

While the f stop used here may not be much of a stretch for most lenses it's nice to see that the oof areas didn't get nasty and also that the IS system was helping out if you had it on. Frankly I'd been rather unimpressed with past examples from this lens but yours look very nice indeed.

Thanks again,
Oly

I have had this lens for a couple of months. It has become a favorite. I wanted alens that would allow me to shoot both landscapes and wildlife without changing
lenses.

Handling - very sold feel. Would prefer the zoom ring was not blocked by the
hood when it is stored backward. Silent focus, but much slower then the 12-60.
Manual focus has quite a bit of historisis, and is hard to focus manually.

I did some test shots against the 12-60, 50mm and 150mm F2's. The 14-150
hold up very well against some great glass.

A couple of shots that are already stored on pbase. A landscape at 14mm & a heron
@ 150mm In a few weeks I'll do some side by side with the Zuiko primes.

14mm F9.0 1/400s
E-3

150mm F5.6 1/250s
IS (not sure if it was the E-3's or the Leica's).

I am pretty sure this is the Leica with the 1.4x TC.
F9.0 1/160s 188mm using a tripod. The background gets a bit harsh
with the TC.

Thanks Oly.

Brian and I were using the 14-150 on the E420, E520 and my venerable E330 today, and it doesn't cease to impress.

Really is a very capable lens indeed considering its a superzoom.
As you say, nothing nasty seems to be going on in OOF areas either.

What has surprised us is that in the first few direct comparison shots between the 12-60 and the 14-150, the 14-150 seems to be resolving better than the 12-60.

Need to look harder at that in more tests using the E3, but considering the sharpness of the 12-60, it is quite something.

Hi Jeff

Thanks for adding your pics and thoughts on this lens.
After just a couple of day's use, I can see why it is a firm favourite of yours!

And I can well believe it is capable of being pitched up against the likes of the 12-60 and other more exotic glass. I have the 35-100 f2 and plan to test those two side by side, as well as against say the Leica 90 R prime that I have.
