Hot-Shoe Cover?

I have been experimenting with my FL-40 and noticed both my manuals always state to remove the hot-shoe cover. I finally looked at other E-10s and noticed that mine never came with one from the factory.

Are they useful protection and do I need one?

They have to be cheap (!).

Lost mine the first time I used it. Have not had one for a year with no problems. Rich

$25!? Wow, that is sad and scary!

I was worried because I do take photos outdoors when high moisture (along the Great Lakes) can be a problem.

About two weeks ago, I was rushing to put my camera away because my group was leaving me behind. A friend pointed to the ground and said that I had dropped something. I picked up my hot shoe cover and put in my pocket. When I got home I put it away in my dresser so I wouldn't lose it.

I wonder what good it does me to have this thing tucked away rather than lose it. Either way, it isn't on the camera for whatever purpose Oly put it there.

I still have it, I just don't use it.

biggerfoot i was only kidding when i said that olympus would charge 25 dollars for one..... for we all know they charge way to much for their accessories.... well lets me say its a rip off ...... anyway you can make one from a piece of plastic that you may have laying around the house its so easy... good luck to you ed

Hey Biggerfoot.

How funny, I received my E-10 just a week or so ago, and there was no hot shoe cover on it.. And I thought it was just me...

Thank you Gerald.

Once again Oly is over charging us for something we can obviously buy for a fraction of the price.

OK, here's my good deed for the decade... Somebody mark the
calendar! :-)

Try Porter's Camera, or more specifically:

http://porterscamerastore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=pcs&Product_Code=13-0479

How's a buck-forty-nine each sound?

Now, if I could just find plugs that'd fit the remote release
socket or at least solve the crisis in the middle east... ;-)

I removed mine when I got the FL-40 and dont know where I put it - it keeps popping up though from time to time, but I never make the effort to put it in my bag. Laziness is so ugly.

How many other camera makers place a hot shoe protector on their cameras? If they don't, you can bet that they're not necessary. This was an esthetic decision on Oly's part!
Just my 2 cent's worth!

This insert is/was commonly provided--at least by Canon-- back when I was buying 35 mm SLR bodies. Yes they're not "necessary", but a nice extra measure of protection--like protective cap over the external PC (flash) connector.

I don't have the number where I called, but either on the website or from someone at tech support (USA), I was given a number for Olympus parts. I called and they send me a hot shoe cover without asking for a credit card or anything. When it arrived, there was a note that asks me to send $5 to cover shipping and handling.

When I spoke to the parts person, the part wasn't in stock, so it took about a month to arrive.
