Jimbob, Ron(Var1) and I went to Taronga Zoo yesterday for a photoshoot. Last time I was there was January 2006 and they have made some excellent renovations since then and it is well worth the visit if you have not seen it in a while.

Most of the following images were taken at higher ISO's and I can say that the higher ISO image quality is excellent from the K20D. Also, I took some Continuous AF shots of the Red Panda as it was almsot always on the move and at the time of taking the shots I was thinking to myself that they will not turn out at all as the Panda was moving fast and even with ISO800 there was little hope of anything worth keeping. Well, was I pleasantly surprised when I viewed them on the computer screen and they were sharp! Looks like low light AF C works quite well! :-) :-) :-)

This was taken through small cage wire and I therefore had to work on it to get reasonable contrast and a decent result. I like the way the birds were cuddled up together. :-)

K20D DA*300 f4 @ f6.3 1/200sec ISO1000. Hand held.

K20D DA*300 f4 @ f5.6 1/50sec ISO800. Hand held.

This was one of the AF C shots.

I bet you've never seen a Koala yawn. Considering they sleep for about 22 hours a day it's a wonder we see them do anything !!

Howdy Lance,

Top shots - you got some which are very similar to mine - and others
that I think you've composed a lot better than shots I made, eg the
lizard and the three brown chested parrots.

I'll have to decide which shots of mine to post up. Hmm..
Hi James,

Thank you very much for your nice comments. Much appreciated, mate.

One of the drawbacks about going to the zoo together(or any venue) and also wandering to each exhibit together means that when we decide to post our photos means that invariably our shots are similar. :-(

Knowing your skill and your Bigma, I am sure that you ahve some other wonderful shots, too. Also, yours maybe better than mine. :-)

very nice pics! the high iso from k20 is really impressive.

also, 300mm handheld at 1/50, that's too much for me i guess! you must have very steady hands.

You deserve it - you work really hard to get those shots.

It's quite reassuring actually to see how similar some shots are. I'm used to missing shots that others make - maybe I'm being more observant now. It's really only walking around with others that lets you compare shots with others. I get to thank you for that too :-)

I have heaps of shots here - even a couple of keepers ;-)
Won't have any problem posting something.

Thanks for the lift too! The Passat is excellent - nice and smooth with plenty of pickup.

SR helps enourmously! ;-)

Generally, you can handhold successfully at 1/focal length x 1.5(for the crop factor of APS C), so the handholdability of the 300mm lens would be 1/450sec - 1/300 x 1.5 = 1/450sec.

With SR, you can get about 3 stops of extra handholdability, so 1/450sec means 1/225 = 1 stop, 1/113 = 2 stops, 1/56 = 3 stops, so I am close to that envelope. :-)

With practice, and sometimes using some aid to brace your arms or something, you can handhold a bit more than the 3 stops.

We all did yesterday. :-)

It goes both ways, mate. There were many shots that you were going for/getting that I didn't think of either, so we both learnt. :-)

I look forward to them. Just don't make them too good or I will look bad! ;-)

Yeah, I am very happy with the new toy. :-)

In my humble opinion Pentax did a smart thing setting you up with the k20d and DA*300. These are some of the best zoo images I've ever seen Lance. You have the skill to make good use of this combination. Absolutely stunning images. Excellent!

Damn, these are good. Did you do much to these images?

That 300 has a beautiful quality to its images and 800iso shots using continuous auto focus would be out of the question with my K10D

I'm slipping into a state of serious gear envy.

Fantastic shots Lance. Never managed to get to the zoo in Sydney. I'll have to twist your rubber arm to go for a shot there when i get my self back over there ;)

Must say for a give away body and lens you're getting some great results hehe :D

Excellent shots, they are very real and natural looking. The lioness shot rivals those lions from long ago, but it would be difficult if not impossible to beat those.

Somehow, I have a feeling that when I do get to the Zoo, my shots are not going to match yours, but I will try anyhow.

Hi Russell,
Lance

Damn, these are good.
Thank you very much for your very kind comments.
Did you do much to these images?
Very little other than convert from RAW to tiffs in Capture One 4 with a little bit of curves, a tweak of WB if required, a touch of saturation, a small touch of noise reduction in the first shot only. In Photoshop, I used very small amounts of Highlight/Shadow in a couple of shots only. Resized for webview and then sharpened with Power Retouche plug in.
That 300 has a beautiful quality to its images and 800iso shots using
continuous auto focus would be out of the question with my K10D
I am very impressed with the ability of the K20D. The low light performance with AF C surprised my to say the least!
I'm slipping into a state of serious gear envy.
There is no doubt that the K20D and DA*300 combo works brilliantly.
