D300 plates...

The Kirk Plates have a nice cutout that you can just get a finger in to open the door and that with the left side of the plate against the rubber of the body on the cam as it should be. If you do have large fingers it might be more problematic but I do use the USB connector as my card reader was an old USB1. Fortunately someone is gifting me a new Lexar UDMA FW800 reader soon so will be a non issue though if seeking a L-bracket, give Kirk a look.

I use an RRS L plate on my D200. With it in place, I cannot open the
cover over the left side USB port.
That's strange.. I have the RRS L plate and D200 and I can open the USB cover door no problem. Not with my fingers, but I can use a small screwdriver or a coin and pry it open; the door hits the plate, but it flexes. Is that what you mean, you can't open it with your fingers or you can't open it at all because the L-plate covers the doors entirely?

I don't have the new plate & to me it looks like the plate has P 200U printed on it in the photo.

All I know is that my P 200U D200 plate fits my D300 perfectly. So I'm just going to use it until I get my Kirk L-bracket for the grip. The the D200 will get it's plate back. Fact is that I feel the P 200U fits the D300 better & easier than the D200.

Just my experience with it. As I always end up fiddling with the plate when I try to get it on the D200. On the D300 it just slips in. But what do I know.

They do look the same but, according to the specs, the dimensions are different - The D300 plate is slightly wider and longer. I've ordered one (the shipping IS a lot for such a small item - and even worse - more to ship within Canada vs to the States!!) - should get it next week.

I have a RRS "l" plate for a D-200. It will work on the D-300 if you file off the two upturned tabs on the front of the plate. I did it this morning, took about 5 min., works great. I may not buy a D-300 plate when they come out, after all $150.00 is a little steep!

I ordered my D300 RRS plate on Monday of this week (11/26) and they have already shipped it. They don't have the L plates for the D300 body with the battery pack (MB-D10) ready yet, but said it would be about three weeks before they start shipping.

Correct. If I don't have a tool (small screwdriver, etc) I can't open it. As you point out, it's not impossible, but annoying. The funny thing is they mill out the inside surface in that area, but on the wrong side. If they milled the outside surface, I believe I could open it with my finger. I can open the cover with the Kirk L plate, so this design issue is a bit annoying. I'd buy the Kirk if I had the chance to do it again.

Don't get me wrong - RRS makes nice stuff and I enjoy it. But they are far from perfect and I'm forced to carefully study their gear to understand what they may have overlooked. They tend to cost the most, but sometimes they fall short of my expectations. The quality of finish and machining is first rate.

Can anyone post pictures of their new RRS D300 L plate? From angles not shown on the RRS web site of course. I'd really love to see what the bottom (under side) looks like.

I did find out from RRW that there isn't an extra threaded hole as there is on the D200 model. Still waiting to find out if they'll add one as a custom option - it's useful for those times you need to attach the camera to something that doesn't have a clamp on it.

At least Camdapter doesn't charge $12 for shipping.

Is it just me or does it seem crazy to pay over $60 for this little plate?

Put it on and examine it very closely. I don't have the RSS L plate but the flat RSS plate and even visually, it looks very badly machined.
