Haha, I read that this morning, cracked me up. I just spent $900 on a "glorified rear lens cap"! Doh~ :)

It's a good thing that they’re taking time and resources to review this lens instead of reviewing the “cap”.

That the Xsi is so light compared to the lens that it is almost like not even there, weight-wise. I just got mine (Xsi) a few hours ago and I was amazed at how light it was. With the kit lens on it feels like a point and shoot or lighter. Certainly lighter than my old Minolta 7i.

I have been really impressed with the kit lens so far. (not that I have plans to give up my Tamron) for for knocking about at 1600 ISO at a concert, I think it will do the trick.

Maybe they meant cost-wise... That lens is ~$1700, while the XSi is $900, almost half...

It's a true statement! Slapped on a spanking new 17-55 2.8 last night and suddenly the XSi was heavy. Still lighter than my F1 with motor.

I don't think they meant it as a negative. I think they just meant that the lens was so much heavier and bigger than the XSI that you could just hold the lens and the camera would hang on it like a lens cap because it's so light. Also the fact that this lens costs way more than an XSI.

I have a 350d and a 1D. I also have the big three L zoom lenses.

I don't use the 16-35 and 24-70 very often with the 350d. Too big and bulky for that little body.

HOWEVER......

I LOVE using the 70-200 f 2.8 IS with the 350d. It is as though the camera doesn't exist. It works well and gives me the reach I need.

So this is really a compliment!

And this is why it's a great camera to go hiking and walk around with. It won't bog you down all day.

I think you're right. My XSi with kit lens is lighter than my Pro1 (recently sold).
