D300 in the UK

I think I'm going to go down the Jessops route, Bright Angels tip is correct, put in webex5 code and it says its taking £15 off but the total shows £30 off. They also throw in a backpack camera bag "worth" £49 for free. Buy on line and collect from Peterborough. Thanks for everbodys tips on this.

Im sure im in the right ballpark.i think you can check it online or ring them.I paid over a grand for mine just after they came out.

As a pro using these every day,for the capability of the camera,I just think Nikon are giving these away.Digital cameras have come so far in such a sort space of time.In the days of film we used to sweat it if we went up to 1600asa.To shoot at 1000asa and not even worry about it just amazing. My pics using flash in difficult circumstances and the worst mixed lighting imaginable are spot on every time.No burnt out faces, nothing.

My advice is dont worry about saving a hundred pound.Just buy it,go and take hundreds of pics with it and enjoy it.Its already great value for money.

out of curiosity, how long did it take to ship ? i've placed a couple of orders with them, for "instock items", in the past but they never shipped anything.

I decide to pull the trigger on a D300 today and it seemed the best deal available (with stock) is Jessops at £970. I ordered on-line for a store pickup. I thought it was strange that the web site asked for my card details (for identification at the store - OK) but stranger that it also required my card security number (why, you pay at the store?).

Anyway I drive to my (not so) local Jessops to pick it up, the Neanderthal man behind the counter takes my reference number, checks it out on his super-computer and promptly goes to a display cabinet and gets a rather scruffy looking D300 off the shelf and plonks it in front of me on the counter. It's covered with fingerprints and missing the rear display cover.

Neanderthal man: There you go.
Me: No, I don't want to look at one, I want to buy one.

Neanderthal man: Yes that's it, I'll go and get the box, I think it's in the back somewhere.
Me: Excuse me, but you don't expect me to buy this do you?
Neanderthal man: Yes, it's what you ordered.

Me: I thought I'd ordered a brand new D300, not a tatty shop-soiled one where Uncle Tom Cobbly and all have dropped it and stuck their fingers in the mirror box to see what that flappy thing is. I'm paying nearly £1000 for this?
Neanderthal man: Well it's all we have. There's nothing wrong with it.

Me: Well, I think you have got me down here on false pretenses, the web site did not say it was shop-soiled.

Neanderthal man: You could drive to our branch in XXXXXX (20 miles away), they probably have one.
Me: No thanks, I'll just go and buy one from a reputable dealer. Goodbye.

Neanderthal man: (as I am walking out of the shop)... I can get you one for tomorrow...
Me: No thanks, goodbye.

if you felt the need to share this with us all, it'd be more useful to other people if you stated the specific store causing you issues.

did you speak to the store manager ? did you make a complaint to the company ?

ive had brilliant service from jessops in telford, wolves and swansea...new items shipped to the store , friendly as reasonable knowledgable staff, online discounts honored even though i ordered on the phone (jessops online doesnt like my credit card for some reason)

I'm sharing it because others might like check with the store before they drive (quite a way in my case) just to find they cannot get what they ordered.

I'm not going to name the store and put an individual in the spotlight (even though I was not too impressed with him) - to my mind it is a Jessops problem.

I did complain while I was there. Why go to the trouble of taking it further, I will just shop elsewhere.

I just tell it how I find it - bad service and I won't go there again.

I think i have that same neanderthal man workinh in my local Jessops also!!!

And come to think about it, his wife too!!!! LOL!!

I can sympathise with you, Jessops CAN be cr*p.

They carry very small stock and do expect the public to pay full price for shop soiled models. I dont think so Mr Jessops!!!!! rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....your getting me started now!!

Grrr, Jessops' policy of selling opened cameras as new is really annoying. When I bought my D50 from Jessops (my first DSLR) I didn't know enough to check but I noticed that it was all set up to shoot. Later on I checked the exif of one of my first shots and it showed over 300 shots!!

When I bought my D200 from them I was in exactly the same situation as the OP. I ordered online and went in to find the one they had in stock was the display one. They looked at me as if I was stupid when I said I wasn't happy about it. I have to say there's some good staff in my Jessops who do know what they're talking about. I agreed to take it but told them I'd be checking the exif and if there was even close to 100 shots on it I'd be returning it. Luckily there were only about 50. I know it's not much in the life of the shutter but it's the principle of the thing. It's alot of money and for all you know some customer could have banged or even dropped it without the staff knowing :(

SO, I bought my D300 from Warehouse Express, took a shot, checked the exif and sure enough it was actuation number 1. The way it should be.

This does raise another issue though. I see LOTS of posts from people who can't decide what lens or camera to get so people advise them to get both and return the ones they don't like. Surely that's not really fair on the store OR the future customers. I'm pretty surprised that shops will even let you do this. Perhaps it's just in the US??

Anyway, well done the OP for walking away.

my tripod head came from warehouse express a couple of weeks ago. the manual had the contents of someones nose on it, suggesting i wasnt the first one to posess this tripod head. i am sure most resellers in the uk sell the stuff they get sent back to them.

So far I have good experiences with Amazon uk.

All complaints were answered very nicely.

Any problem, just put your phone number online on customer page, and they will call you
(Not you to call them and busted with telephone bill as other stores do).

Before 14 days you can return a product if change your mind (box intact). Before 30 days you can return faulty product, they pick it up or reimburse the postage.

Over 30 days there is not any link for a return label, but we can still return a faulty product if less than one year. Again they reimburse the postage. (Here they really obey UK consumer protection law, Sales of Goods Act. And they always answer any question nicely).

If you find that the Nikon shutter count is not 1, you can return the item under consumer law (as not a new product, breach ads description and false information).

I heard that Amazon USA is a cr@p, but not Amazon UK. It is the best store IMHO, at least for me, up to now.
Pricewise, they are not the cheapest.
Service, they are the best, IMHO.

Warning:

What I mean here is product sold by Amazon UK "directly". And NOT the product sold by "external stores" that selling things through Amazon website. Be careful when you select the item, see the seller.

Disclaimer:

I am not promoting Amazon Uk, I am just sharing experience. Others may experience differently.

£971.38 inc-vat

Not bad... but NOT too good

CameraPricebuster list a £975 inc-vat
If you open a Jessops Pro business account you should be able to get
a discount.

Last prices they emailed me about 6 week ago was:

NIKON D300 BODY £830.24 ex VAT.

NIKON D300 BATTERY GRIP MBD10 £135.43 ex VAT.

Details of their website.

I got a good price match from warehouse express, they said they would
keep the offer for a week for me so 2 days later I called back to
take them up on it, and they said we have no record and refused to
repeat the offer (it seems their price match service is not good, its
not the first time they fail to deliver what they say).
Well... Its a Warehouse
what d'you expect from a Warehouse people?

do you know that they are actually a warehouse, and started from there

Unbeatable quality UK service,

purchased mine from there 2 weeks ago for £975 including delivery.

I had to barter a tad, but they were happy to sell at that price.

Everything about Grays is first class in the UK EXCEPT.....just dont
try and sell something back to them for their second hand section.
Yes their stuff can be absolutely as new ad mint with warranty but
they offer very poor buy back prices.

I've mentioned this before as i bought a 28-70 2.8 off them 18 months
ago for £1150 then, when i purchased my 17-55 just a few weeks later,
they offered me £400 for the absolutely 'as new' boxed with warranty
lens back!!!

Theres profit then theres greed, but buying you cannot better them.

Cheers.

Jonathan.

And the really cheeky thing is that Grays shift a lot of stuff on ebay but not under their real name. They have shifted several brand new D2HS cameras recently for way less than their own website prices.

I thought I was purchasing my 80-400 from Amazon but having NIL stock they moved my order to Simply Electronics.

No it will not be UK stock as my lens came from Hong Kong to a UK distributor.

Thankfully it all worked out well in the end but I would not knowingly purchase an expensive lens from Hong Kong?
Simply Electronics seems to be a good price, I wonder if they are
Nikon UK stock or grey import. It has got to be UK stock for me cause
if you are reg. with Nikon and its a pro product they undertake to
turn it round in a couple of days if it goes wrong. To me this is
worth paying a few pounds more. Yes Tony most of the shots on my site
were with the D200 and 17-55, perhaps 6 with the D70. Had my D200
from the first batch that came into the UK in Dec 2005

Bryan

Just moved from Canon to D300 and building up the kit list.

and my wife has my Canon 40D etc

Still looking for a digital back for my Box Brownie.

I bought from Jessops yesterday - no problems

Ordered on their web site......£970 plus a free camera bag, (worth £54 according to their speel)

Collected in store, (Winchester), an hour later

New boxed D300 with Capture NX CD in box plus the Nikon 2 year guarantee

The guy in store very helpful

I am now experimenting with my old AI, (non AF), glass, before deciding which VR lenses to buy

I was always a Nikon film shooter, but my first DSLR was a Pentax K100D.......initially the only thing I miss, so far is NOT having shake reduction in the Camera.........which is great when using "older lenses".ala Pentax

Obviously the D300 is "far" better than the K100D...........but it looks as I will have to invest in a couple of new VR lenses at the longer end.........reluctant at this time to go for the 18-200mm as the comments on this Forum are mixed......but the 70 - 200 2.8 is just "mega money"

I am getting into the "tip of the iceberg" syndrome (again)
