How many would buy the 5DII asap?

In the process of switching from afluent amature to semi-pro and all of a sudden,lenses are my main priority - mainly a couple of fast primes. Unless the 5D replacement has revolutionary DR or High ISO capability, there is nothing more I need that would make any difference to my hobby or wedding work.

I bought a 40D to backup the 5D and if the new 5D is a 16Mp full frame 40D then there's no point in upgrading for me.

If it comes according to the high performance specification rumours (weather sealing, 16.8mp etc.), which i think is not very likely. It could be my new camera.

However if there will be a 1DMKIIIn model announced with some improvements over the sensor size at the same time as the new 5dMKII will be announced I might rethink and then go for the newer 1D.

Pricewise I think the new 5DMKII will be around Euro 3000,- whereas a new 1DMKIIIn could be somewhere around 3700,- euro's. With an additional need for a grip for the 5D MKII this camera would not be the camera of my choice then. Especially because IQ and specs of the 1DMKIIIn might be a lot better.

But after all we first have to see if it comes as it comes.

Not right away I'll 2 will await for reviews, price to come down a tad and for any bugs to be identified and fixed.

It will be interesting to see what new FF lens Canon come up with, I may later sell one of my 40d and buy the 5d Mk 2, wonder if Canon will copy Nikon and put in a 5:1 crop mode.

...even entertaining the idea of acquiring one. Unlike Nikon, Canon doesn't generally have problems meeting demand, so there's no need to pre-order whatever might replace the 5D.
For the sake of argument of when, let's say the 5DII does come out, I
wonder how many would buy it right away? Right away as in taking
preorders or within the first few weeks. What are the chances of
being sold out or back orders due to the large demand it seems it's
getting?

I personally would like to see a good consistent reviews before I
jump it, but with so much hype...who knows.

Only if it has (as it was announced before):
  • Auto Pilot Mode (as Gosha007 pointed it out);
  • Perfect Wedding Mode (it automatically matches colours bridesmaids dresses with best man suits and church interior);
  • Catwalk Mode (it automatically recognizes people silhouette and makes them look from last Vogue Magazine – sorry, internet connection required);
  • Follow Me Mode (whole body is glowing – so it’s easy to change settings or lenses in darkness );
  • Infinity ISO Mode (ability to capture the photos in any light circumstances);
  • Auto Portrait Mode (Viewfinder becomes EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Autofocus Lens);
  • Ultimate weather sealing (no casing required);
  • Build in tripod;
  • (And Least but not last ) Direct Print Button!

I've been waiting since last fall, for Canon to do something.
Finally bought the D3.
Except for maybe resolution, Canon won't beat the D3 specs/features.

Given the price retention of the pro bodies, Canon and Nikon, not much is lost, and the pro build is very nice.
It's unfortunate they took so long.
The other deciding factor was the 14-24mm f/2.8.
Canon needs to offer a super quality WA.
I've shot thousands of shots with the 16-35mm f/2.8 L II.
It's nice but not great.
I think WA is Canons weak link.

I have waited this year for the 5D Mark II...

I couldn't wait anymore...so I bought a 1Ds3.

Disappointed with the 16-35mm II F2.8 L lens?

Wow! I just bought that lens...sheesh!

I am all for what you said...Canon should improve its UWA lineup.

PS Now I am still waiting for the 5D Mark II. I am getting one too!

I gave the 1Ds III a real good look, but after comparing RAW files I couldn't justify the higher price.

I love Canon's 85mm f/1.2, but actually the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 is very nice, and $850 less. I'll miss the 70-200 f/4 IS, but rumor has it Nikon will update it's 70-200.

Don't get me wrong, the 16-35 isn't terrible, but once you've shot some Zeiss glass ( which I have for Nikon), you get spoiled on overall sharpness, as well as corner sharpness and contrast. The distortion on the 16-35 was also annoying, especially when your stitching pano's, and your horizon line has constant bowing that you need to correct. Water horizons look like a wave pattern when shooting near 16mm.

I bet you'll love the 1Ds, from the files I have worked, it looks like a top performer.

If the initial cost is $3000(after all the taxes) give or take, I definitely would wait and I may see how the the current 5D prices will drop...which leads to my other question. In past experiences, does Canon cut off the old models immediately after a new release or does it let it sell itself out gradually? Cuz I'm betting the current the 5D could plummet as low as $1500 by then(if there are any around by that time)...which might also be tempting as at least I know it's proven to have a good track records.

Then I can wait later either to upgrade again after all the hype dies down or if the new gadgets is worth spendng/upgrading.

Thanks Matt.

Zeiss glass? I can use them too in my 1Ds3...right?

Anyway...the last part...yes I am happy I got the 1Ds3...the day it arrived in the office I was so excited I forgot to work...I kept looking at it...I couldn't believe I bought it...this part is embarrassing - that night I was so excited I slept with the 1Ds3 box next to me...I woke up holding the box...I was still in disbelief!

I will take a day off, go to Samy's in Fairfax, wait for it to open, and buy the first box available....then go home and study it. I will connect the 85mm II lens on it permanently. I will just change lenses on the 1Ds3. Why the 85? F1.2...that's why!

Why permanently? Because of the back lens of the 85II L...I don't want to scratch it...so I just want to connect it once and that's it.

Danny Tuason
I would buy it the minute it hits the shelves.

I would guess the 5D will still be made for a little while after any replacement comes out.

However, it may be different for pro models, as I'm not sure if you can still buy MkIIs brandy new.

What's stopping you then? There are plenty of boxes available right now. They mainly have six sides and don't require a lot of studying.
I will connect the 85mm II lens on it permanently.
Oh, I guess you want a cardboard box with an EF lens mount. ;o)

Hehehe!

That's funny!

Danny Tuason

PS Where can I get a cardboard box with an EF lens mount? Use an adaptor? Made by who? Really? Thanks for the 411!
