I just bought a D40 for my son. On my camera (D300) i have a GGS Screen protector. I am not shure if it does not darken the LCD a little and produce more glare.
So should i put on the D40 such a screen protector? What is your expirience?

The only time I've taken the screen protector off my D80 is to clean it and blow dust that's accumlated underneath. Otherwise it's on all the time. Any degradation in the image is trivial in my opinion compared to risking the screen getting scratched. All I use the screen for is judging composition, sharpness, and exposure with the histogram and blinkies. I actually bought a backup screen protector from B&H in the event mine is lost or broken.

Try the da Protector screen protector for the D80. It costs about $8, attaches to the D80 with adhesive strips, and provides some impact protection along with scratch protection. It looks exactly like the existing LCD.

I just started thinking about skipping the protector om my D80. Is that crazy?

Sure the top LCD i a lot smaller but it has been 'unprotected' all the time and I have no scratches on it why would I get scratches on the rear screen?

Isn't the surface hardened? Has anyone scratched their rear display?

The problem, in my opinion, is not scratches, which are insignificant. The problem is a broken LCD. An LCD protector that has some resistance to breaking, and that leaves some space between itself and the LCD, will, hopefully, spare the LCD if banged into something.

I wonder why Nikon does not supply a screen protector with all their cameras. Does the D3 have one?
My D100 came with one, but my D50 didn't. No difference to me.

Its really depends on what you want to protect the LCD from. As others have mentioned the LCD can be scratched or broken, some protectors only help with scratches. I have the InvisiShield protector on my D40X, I am not overly worried about the LCD getting broken because I don't allow anyone else to handle the cam and I am very careful with it. Not to mention these protectors are fairly durable.
