Is anyone viewing HDMI pics on their HDTV? How does it look and where can you get the cable (other than Sony)?

They look really good, but note that you can't edit images, put them back on the card and then view them this way - you only seem to be able to view the JPEGs straight out of the camera before any editing/post-processing.

Please also note that there are some reports of problems using non-Sony brand cables for linking up the a700 to TVs - some people have had no problems, but others report that while a non-Sony cable didn't work, a Sony cable did work for them.

You can pick up the cable from EBAY for about $15.00USD with shipping. Remember to change the DRIVE mode setting to REMOTE control otherwise no image will appear.

1. Hit the drive button
2. Select remote control
3. Connect the cable to camera

4. Place the camera on STABLE surface or tripod and have the camera face you in such a fashion that the IR sensor next to the A700 is in line-of-sight with you holding the remote control.

It works very well for me and it should be the same for you.

Enjoy! :)

From the minds of Minolta to the imagination of Sony, Alpha, like no other.

Absolutely, even changing the ORIENTATION from landscape to portrait or VICE VERSA will prevent the pic from displaying at ALL from the HDTV.

That's the first I've heard about having problems by using the non-Sony cables. Thanks for that. But I have had no problem with using third party cables. They look great, make sure you take a good picture first. You cannot edit them and play them back on the TV.

Weird how this cam has all these odd arbitrary limitations. Even my old Pentax DL (3+ year old technology?) could be viewed on the TV with all the same functions as can be done on the LCD, rotate, filters, and all.

I suspect most of its processing capability is spent driving the HDMI output and the associated protocol stuff that goes with it.

I love this! Had to buy a new Bravia last week, and decided to get an Xbox as well to allow some bargaining. :-) Well, this thing can wirelessly stream photos (and music and video) from my computer or from an external drive attached directly to the Xbox. The Xbox has a decent slideshow function (can even play music during the slideshow), and photos look amazing on the 32" screen ... even old F717 shots. Amazingly sharp and with great colours. But my R1 and A700 shots are clearly the best. I only wish the Xbox would allow zooming/panning. No more attaching the camera to the TV for me (even though I only tried that out for the first time a couple of weeks back). Time to annoy friends and family with slideshows of my travels... :-)

On my Sony Bravia, there is no problem with rotation or all the rest. In fact it's all built into the TV. Normally I just hook the CF to the Bravia with a USB adapter and look at them that way. That does not require buying a cable if you have a USB adapter for CF, which should be in your kit anyway.

No, the TV is not a computer or graphic editor, you can do quite a bit of adjustment of the picture you are viewing, but that's just for viewing and is not saved. And I would not expect Photoshop in my TV anyway. That is unless I hook up the Bravia as a second monitor on my MacBook Pro.

Actually not true. You can edit up any jpeg, but it back on the CF and play it with our Sony Bravia. Don't know how true that is for lessor brands of TV.

Walt

I agree, hooking the camera up is not the way to go. My laptop has a
DVI output. I have a DVI to HDMI cable hooked up to my Sony Bravia
HDTV and it looks great.
Yep, my Sony Bravia looks fairly good as a computer monitor, as long as you don't try to view it too close. My MacBook Pro is happy to use it as a 2nd monitor. My Bravia has both a VGA and HDMI connection you can choose.

I've got a CF to USB adapter setting by the Bravia for when I want to look at shots or other graphics on the Bravia. The remote controls a pretty complete set of viewing controls.

Hooking up the camera seems silly.

Walt

Thanks Walt, I was going by what I heard. I'm gonna try it now! I do recall though, not being able to see some that I had edited before not showing. I'll post back when I try this again tonight. Unless someone else already at home could do it. :)

Are we talking about using the camera with the HDMI cable to play back edited pics on compact flash? That's what I was referring to. Now, unedited jpegs straight from the camera was no problem. But once you edited or changed the orientation on one, it didn't play back.

Hi Walt,

The problem is when I had the a700 attached to my computer and I treated the Camera a hard drive (L: drive). I had a series of five images of the Chrysler Building in portrait and landscape mode and when viewed on the computer monitor via the L: drive, it was displayed horizontally. I forget which .jpg view I used (ACDC?) and I "rotated" the building to portrait from landscape so it would be easy to view on the computer monitor. The jpg got saved with this metadata and when I disconnected the camera from the computer and then tried to view the pic on the 3" lcd. The PIC would not show up at all... So when I hooked it up the the 52" LCD in the home theater room the same thing happened as well.

Basically the HDMI cable shows what the 3" LCD is able to display. If it can't play on the 3", then it's not going to output via HDMI.

You can 'rotate' on camera, no problems just don't do it using computer software view (eg, ACDC, JView, MpView or others that write metadata/Exif info) back to the drive. The A700 will somehow re-interpret this as a corrupted file and refuse to disply on the 3" or VIDEO out (Composite/HDMI) connector...

Um, I don't normally view my photos with the Camera tethered to the computer it was a fluke as I had some distant relatives over the house and wanted to see if the shots were ok before displaying them on the 52"... :(

Needless to say, that WON'T happen again. Only time the a700 will be tethered to the computer is to TRANSFER data from CAMERA to COMPUTER, no more viewing them as an online drive, learned my lesson! Thankfully, the pics were still ok, and upon importing it back into LR/PHOTOSHOP images were intact... :)
