Hello Everyone,

I bought the Nikkor 17-35 a few months ago and I am kind of disappointed by its questionable sharpness. I discovered a little label (Ø 5 mm) on top of the box and suspected this to be related to the issue mentioned above. Nikon support in Germany (I bought the lens in Cologne) told me those were markings of the sorting system of Nikon distributers.

Does anyone know more about those dark red labels that I've seen on a lens box on ebay too?

Regards

Peter

Nikon has had those marking-dots on the retail boxes for a long time. It is part of their distribution system, at least that is the answer that is given once you ask them - like you already did.

I have several Nikon retail boxes here and most of them have dots in differing colors. My 2 D200 boxes both have blue dots, for example. It does not mean anything like "defective" or "refurbished".

My copy, which is the best out of 3 that I tested, and has already been to Nikon twice, is still too soft at any aperture. Its the worst lens that I ever bought, including some cheap Russian ones. I'm still waiting to see any images that would change my mind about this lens being a total piece of cr@p!

Thanks for your reply.

My suspiciousness concerning the dots has gone now.
The sharpness issue should be checked by the Nikon support service next week.

I also bought the 17-35 a month ago and returned it. It had both severe front and back focus issues. It would not get sharp unless stopped down to 5.6. I have never seen a lens this bad. I bought the 24-70 2.8 instead.

This won't change your mind, I think. How did you get stuck with it?

Sorry, I still don't see a $1500 lens at work here.

The dealer that I bought the lens from is a friend of many years and after trying 3 copies I was too embarrassed to return it. Initially I thought that something might be wrong with it and that Nikon service would fix it, but nothing was wrong to fix according to them. I guess its time I stopped bitching about it and stick it on e-bay!
