Zoom Creep.

Renato.

You shouldn't be so concerned about what others think. Like Evilone, you apparently have this "How do I Look" phobia, which absolutely ignores the truth. When people see him a rubber band would never be noticed. They immediately feel sorry for him anyway. I can understand that.
A better effort that may help you both, might be some self esteem classes.

I personally will use my "Sony Orange" rubber, in public, around the longest cylinder in my possession, with pride, for everyone to see. ;-)
Darwin

I thought of three words for you that started with "F" too. But they weren't Form, Fit and Function, fella. ;-)

And I just want you to know that a Bungee cord holds the flap closed on my cave door. And It's "Sony Orange" too. To cool!
Darwin

Hi Darwin,

It's not a self esteem thing, rather a pride thing. I see it as the equivalent to having ripped some clothes - where I can either apply a safety pin or apply some of my lousy stitching. Both do the job, but both are not aesthetically equal.
Renato

I just order a bunch of orange rubber bands, the wide ones from Office max.. IM going to put one of these on everyone of my lenses..whether they need it or noit... it looks like a fashion statement to me...and IM getting in on it...

To the best of my knowledge, all of my lens are 'creep free'. That orange rubber band is a cool idea though. I think I will pick some up just for show.

This is a great thread, going from rubber bands and electrical tape to spinach and brocolli all in one late evening.

Well, I was referring to normal adhesive tape that goes on paper, mainly because the electrical black tape I had in my cupboard was too thick to go inside the lens. Thin electrical tape that did fit would be even better than normal clear tape.

But you are right, the discussion here is a fun mix of divergence and eventual convergence around the topic.

Maybe someone could make them with the inner surface 'stepped' so the wider diameter grips on the front part of the zoom ring, and the smaller diameter presses on the extending part of the lens. More advanced models could have 'pimples' on the part holding the extending tube to vary the pressure and resistance

They could become a status signal as they signify that you actually use the lens and have taken a lot of shots.

If they were about 1/2 inch wide there would be room for wording eg
'pro camera accessory'

Any suggestions?

Tom

Speaking of vegetables, I found that the rubber band around a recent bunch of broccoli was much more elastic than the asparagus rubber band. The broccoli band did nothing to prevent zoom creep, while the asparagus was much better, not perfect, but pretty close. My Sigma 24-135mm doesn't creep - it flies! But now, with the magic Zoom De-creeper, it stays pretty still.

Thanks for passing this along, Darwin.

That's an interesting use for the broccoli band!

And recycling too. Now if they just made those bands in Orange. ;-)

Reduce, re-use, recycle...

The useless broccoli band was black, while the useful asparagus band was lilac. Go Figure.

The thought and free flow of ideas on this topic is truly just a bit overwhelming to me.
I just had a movement. No wait, I am moved ! Boy I'm glad I caught that one. :-(

I think the "Pimples" one and the "PRO EXTREME" on the 1/2" rubber band are the ones that moved me the most. In fact I'm still moving.

We are blessed. ;-)
Thank you all.

Really has a nice ring to it. The tip on the asparagus rubber band, should go into the books. That is really a good one. Thank you.

The one I use comes off of the newspaper that is delivered to the house. Perfect. Orange and everything.
Another fine tip for my resourseful friends here is this.

I also use the plastic bags the paper comes in when it rains you know? To put my fish in it closed off with a twist em tie, before I place it in the ice chest.
I know. Just another touch of genious. ;-)
Some of us just "Got It".
Some of us don't Bill. ;-)

The writing would be somewhat small, but most photographers either have very keen eyesight, or eyeglasses that deliver the same sharpness.

Or the could take a picture of the rubber band on someone else's camera, and post process the words out on their computer.

Imagine their surprise when something they thought was just an orange rubber band turns out to have the words "PRO EXTREME" on it!
