Someone mentioned fixing lens creep with a rubber band. I don't remember who or which forum but I'd like to thank them.

For those who missed it, it really works nicely. You would never even know it is there and it works. Give it a try.
Thanks,
Darwin

I put some adhesive tape on the bottom of the barrel (over which the zoom part runs) so that you can't see it there unless you turn the camera upside down.

Usually one thin piece, or a second directly on top of it, is sufficient to increase the friction and stop the creep.

Renato,
With all due respect, I don't want sticky and ugly tape residue on mt
lenses. Try the rubber band. Not a mark and it works. ;-)

Hi Darwin,
It would have to be a really thin rubber band, wouldn't it?

Residue wise, rubber bands deteriorate and fragment over time, and small bits might go anywhere, whereas the tape doesn't.
Renato

Renato,

No it is actually a pretty substantial size. I would say about 1/4 inch across. It's long enough that there isn't that much pressure.

I've been very impressed at how well it works. I might have to carry a couple of spares for if and when they break but that is OK.

Can you post a picture of it? My feeble little mind is having trouble grasping exactly ow this is working.

Just for fun!

I remember hunting with a kid many years ago, I had the latest and greatest engraved shot gun..and this kid had a single shot 50 year old shotgun that had white medicinal tape holding the fore stock in place because is had cracked in half... I could not hit a single bird with my Bennelli.. but this kid never missed. but that shotgun was really ugly... I may not be a good hunter, but I look good doing it...

can you see a Pattern emerging here??? LOL ] : )... I would not want some rubber band holding my lens together, even if it worked..I would go with the much stealthier black electrical tape, and OH Yes, to choose an Orange rubber band which only draws more attention to the broken lens is really against all the rules of the Fernado Lamas rules of looking good. ( Billy Crystal doing Fernado Lamas SNL cira 1985 ) anybody with me on this???? You look Marvelous..... " It is much better to look good, than it is to actually be good"

Darwin,

I have the same problem with my 100 - 300mm APO lens - it's so bad that I just quit using it. I was shooting baseball, from the bleachers, and stood up to go to the concession stand and the thing hit a lady in front of me right on top of her head. Embarrassed the hell out of me. Maybe I'll find a rubber band and give your fix a try. It's too good of a lens to never get used.

My college softball team won the region/state championship and will be playing in the nationals in Plant City, Fl in a couple of weeks, and I've been commissioned to ride with them and take pictures. Should be a lot of fun, but I doubt that I'll get the access that I have to the field here, so have to pack a bunch just to make sure that I have what I need when I get there.

My equipment list can be found in my profile.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, 'WOW! What a ride!!'

.... okay, now I have a better idea what you meant.

But using my method, almost no one will notice that I've applied a fix to the lens.

When the lens is zoomed all the way in, it is impossible to see the tape.

When it is zoomed all the way out, someone would have to be underneath the camera to see the tape.

Using the rubberband method, everyone will know that I have a creepy lens.

And I couldn't bear the thought - some Nikon or Canon person thinking -

"Look at that poor guy, reduced to having some old lens held together by a rubber band".

Renato, I am with you my friend...its much better to look good doing it and fail at photography, than it is to look bad and be an expert.

Darwin, lives in a cave anyway... I am suprised he didnt use a bungie cord... they sell them in orange too...and he is way too stuborn to accept that your idea is much better..Ive used your method on one of my lenses too and when I told him of my method ( also yours ) he blew me off because he already came up with that aweful display of engineering failure. its suppose to be about form, fit and function Darwin, not any port in a storm...

It's all just a matter of acting with confidence. Most people don't know KM even made a DSLR, so when people say "What's that?" pointing to the 5D or 7D, one can just say that it's Konica Minolta's newest DSLR, instead of saying it's their very last one.

Oh it's not an engineering failure, as it plainly works. To me, the rubber band just detracts from the look of a mean looking lens.

Now, if a bungie cord could be fitted, then it may well have a cool look about it.

You actually hit a poor lady on the head. How terrible. ;-)

Now I have seen your equipment profile and I think you need to be very careful at what you pack for the ball game. If you take to much of it you could rupture something. ;-)
