In top 5 order

1. 85f1.2L ... So sharp, makes walking back and forwards worth it !!!

2. 100-400L ... on a 1DIII perfect for local rugby matches, not too long, not too short
3. 300 f2.8 ... Just got, and I'm in love!
4. 24-105 f4L ... Perfect walkabout for 5D and 1DsIII
5. 16-35 f2.8L ... Perfect walkabout for 1DIII

1 - 300 f/2.8 IS - oh my what a lens...
2 - 600 f/4 IS - just a smidge shy of 'oh my' but still totally awesome

3 - 85 f/1.2L II - another one of those 'oh my' lenses but I would cry more if I lost the 300
4 - 24-70 - total work horse
5 - 180 macro - the colors are just unbelievable

Yes you can certainly snap a picture :)
Very nice collection, well done!
Thanks for sharing!

Sorry, I am dyslexic, but a 1.8 would probably be pretty useless, the f2.8 is useless at f2.8. Does nto get sharp in the center until around f4, and never at the edges.
If you REALLY have a 70-200 f1.8 I'll buy it :)

Cheers,

Colin

These are for use on my 5D

Landscapes and architecture: Whenever I can, I use my 24 mm f3.5L TS-E. I know it is not the sharpest L lens available, but the ability to avoid perspective distortion and control depth of field, makes this a winner for me.

Portraits: 85mm f1.8. Love to use it at f2.8 to really isolate the subject.

General Purpose: 70-200 f4L.

Hey Doug, ya got the CZ21? How ya like it? I have a 50 ZS on the way to replace my 24-105 (in that length). Need a 17-40 replacement. Is this the lens with an 82mm filter? How on earth would you use ND grads on that?

I may get the 24L, but my Zises lens guru says it has corner softness. You like it better than the 35? Is it sharper or just a better focal length?

Hey Ben. I love the CZ21. The 82mm filter size isn't an issue at all for me. I can also use the same CPL on my 16-35. I use Singh-Ray 4x6 grad ND filters on a Lee holder so I just bought an adapter ring for the CZ and the 16-35.

As for the 24L being soft, haven't seen it yet. I'll see if I can email you a couple of shots I took in Joshua Tree (granted they are stopped down around f/10). I love the 35 but I feel that my shots with the 24 are more "dramatic" so I enjoy shooting with it more. But, I'm having a hard time justifying keeping it. I have the CZ21, the 16-35, the 24 and the 24-70 now. I kind of think I need to get rid of something and am afraid the 24L is going to be the one to go. I just can't part with the 24-70. I like it too much and the convenience of a zoom for going light is too big a deal to give up. These L lenses are great. They hold their value so well I don't really worry too much about trying a lens out and then having to sell it. I've been getting about 90 cents on the dollar for them. But, I think I'm sick and need help. I love buying camera gear... :-) and :-(

You must have spent nearly as much on ND grads and holder as on the lens :-)

I have a set (2) of Cokin-P size Singh Ray ND grads. I also have the warming Singh Ray CP which I can use for the first time on my 35f1.4. Man I love it, and it is not available for the larger size holders. It would not work on the 24 L either, 72mm fine, 77mm too large.

I am thinking to rent the 24L for my upcomming vacation. Cheaper than buy and sell. You are right however. My 24-105 sold within 15 minutes after I posted at FM. And that was with a warning that I could not reccomend it for landscapes on a FF camera.

Is the 16-35 much better than the 17-40? I always liked the 17-40 until I went FF, and found the really dark and soft corners.

I think I am done with zooms. I never travel light, I am a three bag photographer who is looking for a vest for more stuff. I have the same sickness you have.

I didn't like the light falloff on the 17-40 either. Too early for me to tell on the 16-35. I've only gone out with it once and didn't get a chance to shoot much (long story). So, jury's out but I expect it to be better with the 1Ds than the 17-40. Time will tell.

If you get your hands on the 24 I have a feeling you aren't going to want to give it up. It is a magnificent lens.

I shoot old buildings (several hundreds to several thousand years old, mostly in rural, hard to get areas) and archeological sites. Use the lghtest and smallest equipment whenever possible. I carry them on my backpack for long hours.
The equipment I mostly carry are;
mag-fiber tripod
EOS 5D
12-24 sigma (heavy, but 12mm is irreplaceable, 17-40 mostly stays in the car)

24mm TS-E (will consider replacing this with the new nikkor 24mm PC any users on Canon, with the new G adapter ?)
55 mm 2.8 Micro Nikkor (I have a superb copy)
70-200 f4 IS (replaced the non-is, non-is one was slightly better ! )

I absolutely need live preview for the TS lens, but 1Ds series is too heavy for me, waiting.....

cut my stock was considering a nikon switch..

1. 85L F1.2 mkII (sharp..sharp sharp)
2. 400mm F2.8L IS ( macdaddy lens)
3. 70-200mm F2.8L IS ( the workhorse)
4. Contax MM 35-70 F3.4 ( great colors )
5. Sigma 24-60mm F2.8 ( does fine in a pinch)
