I have a D80 and am thinking of getting either an SB600 or 800 to go with it. Reckon I would find it very useful indeed. Now I know that the 800 can be used off camera and controlled by the D80 pop-up flash but can the 600 also work in this way?

The reason I ask is that the 800 is really a bit too expensive so I am hoping the 600 can do this.

I have a D70, which has "commander mode". The D80 is the latest version of this camera, and should have this feature. I have a SB600 and it works just fine wireless.

The SB-600 can not be used as a commander flash, the SB-800 can. On the side this one has a built in bouncecard, and comes with a tupperware difuser and two gel filters. Also has a fifth battery compartment for faster recycling.
As a remote it works just fine !

I have a D80 and SB600 and this flash works fine off camera with the D80 in commander mode. It uses the popup flash as a trigger. The other reply meant that the SB800 can command other flashes which the SB600 can't. Since the D80 has commander mode built in the SB600 works just fine with it.

Yes, you can use the SB600 off camera using the built in flash as the commander. You can use an SB800 to command a SB600 but not the other way around. That's probably about as clear as mud.

Short answer, yes, you can use the SB600 off camera with the D80 using the on-camera flash to command the SB600.

Bob hit the naill right on the head... I am glad that I went with the SB600. It is a good way to start and if later on your needs grow, you can get a SB800 which can become the "main" unit.

Yes... I use 2 600's off-camera wirelessly....

Someone explained that the 600 can't be used AS a commander... which wasn't even your question.

Edit: Didn't look at the times... assumed this was a current post... ignore me.
