I just found out that a card I bought at Best Buy, almost a year ago, is likely a counterfeit. Best Buy is still selling these cards on their website and at the local store in my area.

I believe this could be a large scale fraud. If anyone has purchased San Disk memory cards at Best Buy, please check to see if your card is fake.

Here is the fake 2mb card that I purchased, on the Best Buy Website

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ;jsessionid=TOZFSSUBVQI4NKC4D3NFAHI?skuId=7914046&st=pro+duo&lp=8&type=product&cp=1&id=1149207969399

Here is a pic of the real card, from San Disk's website.

Notice the differences.

Someone from San Disk looked at a pic of my card and has confirmed that the card I have is fake.

I believe I have uncovered a large scale fraud. If Best Buy has been selling these for a YEAR, since I bought mine, think about how many thousands of people have been ripped off. It may be an innocent mistake and I am not saying BEst Buy did this on purpose, but it still makes me very angry, that I have been scammed.

It makes me sick that it seems Best Buy cannot tell the difference between authentic merchandise and fake knock offs.

....months after purchasing a Sandisk extreme III 4 gig cf cards for my R1 a couple of years ago. Took it back with receipt and coroborating printouts from Sandisk site, manager said he wasn't aware of any problems, nothing he could do.
I haven't been back.

Also happened when ordered a Sony 1g HighSpeed ms duo card from Circuit City for my cell. Same result- card messes up when full- can only recover some of the shots. Circuit City response: must be something wrong with the phone (not), not aware of any problems, no exchange after 30 days. Period. Haven't been back there either.

After these experiences, Best Buy has been my store of choice for consumables.

Thanks for the warning, but now where I am supposed to go?! They're probably all the same but you'd think these stores would buy from reliable wholesalers wouldn't you?

Does anyone remember when the customer was King?

Regards,

A.J.

That supposedly fake card looks just like the (presumably genuine) one shipped in the box with my Sony Ericsson K750i. Just 2.0GB vs 64MB.

you bought from BB? You never said. You can't always go by pictures on web sites. Also while there are many fakes out there, I believe a lot of these products are sourced out to sub-contractors for manufacture, just like DVD blanks, so they may indeed differ in appearance. It's a confusing world.

It is a confusing world. The guy I talked to at San Disk seemed pretty sure mine was a counterfeit. He said there should not be such differences in the cards, as the pictures of the two cards shows.

They are still investagating.

I have not had any trouble with it, although I timed it against a Sony brand card and it is about 25% slower, in writing and transferring.

I bought two fake 8 gig Sony flash drives. I took the first one home and it didn't work, so I wrote it off as a bad investment. The next time I passed by that shop I went in and complained that the thing didn't work. I got talked into buying another one. (They were really cheap).
All it proves is that the girl who was selling them was really cute.

I have 4 2g duos that look like the blue one. All purchased at different times, from different vendors, although the only one I know for sure was amazon, bought in 2006. They all work fine and hold the right amount of pictures (I remember someone talking about some fakes that were relabeled as larger cards).

I have some 1GB SanDisk MS PRO Duo cards that are either blue or turquoise. I've used them many times over the past year and have not had any problems with them. Performance-wise they are the same as my Lexar and Sony 1GB MS PRO Duos as well as my 1GB SanDisk "gaming" version (translucent turquoise).

They've been used in my F717s, F828, V1, H1, P8, R1, and P73 (using the adapter), as well as my L1 and H5. The cards were purchased over a year ago from Staples for $9.99 after coupon.

I can post pics if you want.

Looking at the Scandisk website I think I see cards of both colours, cards with and without the graphics after the word "Scandisk" and also the use of fonts with and without serifs in the word "Scandisk".

Are there other differences?

The 2.0 GB SanDisk PRO Duo card I got at CC on sale for $25., 17 months ago, looks exactly like the blue one on the BB website picture. It's labeled "2.0 GB", instead of "2 GB" and has the extra little card logo after the name. It has worked well in both cameras and computer and I even filled it up to its full capacity in a card-slot and there were no problems. What exactly makes you think it is a fake, besides having this one type of full-card disorder?

They say that the latest generation of counterfeit U.S. money is so close to the real thing, that who knows, I may have paid for it with fake bills. What does SanDisk have to say about this? I'd think they'd be all over the issue, if major stores were selling anything other than the genuine article from them. This serial number is on the back of my card: BEC06260041200 Made in China.

A person from Sandisk said their were obvious "differences" in the card onthe Best Buy website and the picture of an authentic card, from the Sandisk website.

I received three emails yesterday, asking for pictures of my card and for additional information. Since then, silence.

I would imagine Sandisk would not want this to be public, because IF Best Buy is actually selling fake Sandisk cards, how will the public ever know what is the real thing? It could seriously hurt Sandisk's reputation, if the card is fake.

I was also asked to email a picture to their rma dept, which I believe handles returns. If the card was real, would they ask me to forward a picture to their return department?

I'll let everyone know if I hear anything else

Don't know if this is of any help, but here is a link to the official Sandisk corporate logo guidelines as an aid to identification in the future.

http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/pdf/corporate/SanDisk_logo_guidelines.pdf

The document has last year's date on it so I doubt that those were last year's merchandise, but somehow I do have the feeling that using a similar but not identical logo might make the charge of counterfeiting a little harder to prove in court. Interestingly enough - this doesn't match the logo on that "sandisk" 64MB MS Duo mentioned as being included with that cell phone here either.

Don't have any easy answers myself, I'm not a lawyer, but my own advise is to buy direct if possible. You usually get what you pay for and ocassionally you even pay for something you don'r get!!

Last month in Cali Colombia I tripped accross a discontinued Sony 2GB high speed MS duo card that looked a little suspicious (no guarantee papers on view on the backside) and the price wasn't exactly a bargin.

I asked if the card was legit and I was told it was. But when I asked to have in writing on the invoice the right to have the card verified for authenticity at the Sony service outlet - well - no refunds once the package has been opened. And of course it's impossible to get the serial no off the back of an MS Duo card without opening the package.

I walked - but it makes a guy wonder how much of what else was being sold in that store (computer accessories for all major brands) was legit.

Actually I'm very glad that you took the time to contact them. SanDisk have recently launched a slew of lawsuits - you might have given them the info they need to launch another.

Just to clarify, the 64MB card I got with my phone was inside the sealed box with the handset, it was not an additional item supplied by the retailer. It came with a Sandisk MS > MS Duo adapter, too.

I don't know about where you are but every Sony Memory Stick I've bought in the UK has a hologram on the package.
