I've been hearing this guy in the morning for weeks while leaving for work. Today he decided to investigate my feeder setup and proceeded to gorge himself...how kind of him to visit on a Saturday!

E300/70-300 zoom, 1/100@f8, f9, ISO400
The closer shot was 239mm/FL, the other 202mm.
Both SP, CAF, tripod mounted.

Both processed from RAW in Adobe PSE6.

These are beauties. Thanks for posting these and they show why bridge cameras such as my 560 can only go so far. These are great photos.

They also show that some of the "obsolete" equipment (E1 and E300) can still do the job. The new 70-300 zoom (a standard Oly "budget" lens) works great with both these cameras. Don't get me wrong...I'd love to have a shiny new E3 with a 50-200SWD and an EC14, but it just isn't in the financial cards right now. So, I have to soldier on with the old stuff.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. Thanks for looking!

Hi Tom,

I like these very much. I have the E510 and the 70-300 and have shot quite a few pics of Cardinals. I've yet to get anything near as sharp as these. I've tried hand held and with a monopod but I don't have a tripod that will support the 70-300. Another toy on my wish list.

Joe:

I use a Manfrotto 728b digi tripod which, as Manfrottos go, is an inexpensive tripod, around $125. It has a fixed pan head, and has a quick release plate. I bought another plate so I can swap between the E300 and the E-1 very quickly.

This tripod supports my E-1/70-300 just fine, but that's about the most I would put on it.

I would certainly recommend a tripod similar to this as a minimum as opposed to something you might see at Wal-Mart for $30 or $40 bucks.

Glad you enjoyed the photos...thanks for the compliment.

Great shots, Tom. For some reason, I think Cardinals look like Sylvester Stallone, perhaps because of the big beak and black eyes!

The best Cardinal shots I´ve seen here since a long time! Congrats, Tom, great job!

Thanks to all for the generous comments.

I'm learning how to properly use the new 70-300. It's the longest reach lens I've ever owned and I have had to resist the urge to always use it at the maximum reach. Sometimes, less is more.

I rarely comment on bird images because so many of them are so
forgettable.

These are superb. I prefer the more distant shot. Good work.
Steve:

Your kind comment is most appreciated...and I also like the distant shot a little more.

You really got a couple of terrific shots of him, Tom! Just look at that detail of little hairy feathers! Excellent shots.
