1 ) No Tv ( time-value ) setting ( selecting shutter speed )

This is a serious omission. Most parents will want pictures of their kids in action ... sports or otherwise .... this camera fails to allow the selection of shutter speed .... and the "sports" mode shutter speed is way to slow for most sports.... a serious omission

2 ) The macro mode was available on the command dial on the TZ3 .... but now is an add-on ( extra step required ) to other shooting modes .....

3 ) running time for full HD is 7 miutes .... for SD is 15 minutes .... not convenient for shooting kids sporting events .... This was not a limitation on the TZ3. With 32 GB SDHC cards available, this limitation is pointless.

How did the reviewer miss these important points?

I would recommend the TZ3 until Pansonic wakes up and addresses there issues.

RU saying that in taking a movie, you are maxed at 7 min at HD and 15 min at SD? That would be a deal breaker for me. My Canons only shoot SD, but unlimited (to the size of the card).

I think I read in the review that the TZ5 was the first HD video camera reviewed. I thought the Canon TX1 was reviewed here too? If so, how did those camera's compare in HD video mode. I know the TX1 has no focusing issues and also has excellent sound.

ad 1: TZ5 offers a fastest speed of 1/2000th sec which is more than enough for most sports. The TZ5 usually defaults to the fastest possible shutter speed for any given lighting situation.

ad 2: Instead of choosing macro mode on the dial you now press one button and you are in macro mode. Inconvenient?

ad3: This is not correct. Maximum recording time in all movie modes is 15 min if you have a big enough memory card. This is clearly described in the video section of the review.

On my FZ18, I could select shutter speed, but then had to keep adjusting it for the right exposure. With the TZ5, in sports mode, you set the hight ISO you are willing to live with, and you'll get the highst accptable shutter speed -- and it's very easy to increase ISO to get faster speed.

By the way, anyone want to buy a slightly damaged FZ18??

Thanks Lars for the recap! Also from what Panasonic told me, they where addressing a few things with a firmware update, and one of the issues was the length of movies, which is no biggy if you have editing software. Also turn off the Continuous Auto Focus (AF) during movie recording, this eliminates the refocusing issue, and then just use the button to refocus if you have too if you zoom in on a item, seems to work fine so far this way...

Bravo! I hope the Panasnoic rep told you the turth. I think the only way to keep them on track is keep on complaining. Then their support team will pressure the development team to correct the problem.

how does one know when a firmware update is available --- and how do I get it???

Come on that was some funny twisted English Humor at it's best!

If your looking at these camera the best thing to do is test drive it. Sure there are a crapload of naysayers on here as usual, but you will never find a perfect P&S camera.. This camera does a lot more right than wrong...

Check out Gordon page.. Again decent review but it is just an overview of the camera. He also points out the Auto Focus issue on video mode, but if you turn off the continuous AF on movie mode it isn't an issue. Again a quick review, and just like Dpreview things can be missed or left out.

I don't get why everyone is so picky about the video capacity/quality of this digital camera. Doesn't everyone remember the days when cameras only tooks photos? Personally I see video as an added perk and would never use it film more than 1-2 minute clips. Is anyone really comfortable filming for a long time with a digital camera v. using a camcorder? If you want to film your kid's sports events use a video camera. I think because of all the new models and features available we've come to expect too much out of a P&S camera. Just my personal opinion.

I think there is no limit what people expect from their cameras, cars, phones, etc. My daughter just bought one of those new Fuji Z20FD's, that thing will let you put those little cartoon caption bubbles for comments on your photos. And also let you give people rabbit ears, or dog ears, or donkey ears.

Talk about redundant uselessness.

My son-in-law who is a dufus, took 200 pictures at my daughters youngest sons birthday, and put rabbit ears on everybody. Needless to say he is now sleeping in the dog-house. And my daughter says he will never touch her camera again. :) :)

Three old outdated cameras, Two Fujis, and a TZ-1.

Most parents just want a P&S where they turn it on and take a shot. Anyone serious enough to want shutter speed priority will have purchased a DSLR.
I would recommend the TZ3 until Pansonic wakes up and addresses there

The TZ3 has no shutter priority either. And IQ is far worse at higher ISO's. I'd only recommend the TZ3 over the TZ5 if money was an issue.
