I need to get ahold of a Nikon (america) rep

Just curious but is this for a resale business or is this for your employees? (I mean do you plan on selling the D40's or will your company/org use them?) If it's the latter try this number out and tell 'em Noah from Sterling,VA 146 sent you! They should be able to get you those kinds of quantities. Any Nikon Rep that anyone on this forum would know would most likely be for retail marketing channels not business sales. Hence I'm giving you a business sales channel to go through. I know a ton of reps for companies, but about 50-70% of them work through marketing companies, not directly for the vendor and wouldn't have the tools to get you what you need, but simply to answer questions about the product.

customminds:

1. Nikon, usually handle camera sales through their dealers; however, for numbers like that, they should be able to work something out with you.

2. The Nikon Mall, has a phone number, you can call & they should have someone that can connect you with the proper Nikon Contact, for such special arrangement.

3. Here is that phone number (1-877-876-4770), along with some general info:

"Phone Orders

You will be much better off going with a small camera shop, since they will negotiate with you, and be willing to take a small mark up on that many. You will make there year as far as Nikon sales go, so they will bend over backwards to serve you.

The bigger store will just quote a price and say take it or leave it.

Therefore, why would one believe a "small camera shop", can negotiate a better arrangement/deal than by dealing direct with Nikon Headquarters, in the country of purchase --- the USA, in this instance, :-)

Except for the products they list at NikonMall, Nikon USA does not sell its products direct to consumers (the U.S government is the only exception and it's a partial exception). Nikon USA sells only to retail dealers who then resell the product to consumers.

If the OP wants to buy 100 D40s from Nikon USA, he's have to apply to become a Nikon dealer. And Nikon won't open him as a dealer for a one-time purchase.

I'm a former Nikon sales rep and quite familiar with these issues.

While both of the Nikon employees named are nice people and will probably try to help you find someone else at Nikon to talk to, they have nothing to do with sales. They are pro technical reps -- i.e. they do technical support work for professional photographers who use Nikon cameras.

The kind of rep who sells D40s is a Nikon sales rep, a totally different group of people. But Nikon USA does not sell direct to consumers (except for the products on NikonMall and certain replacement parts). They definitely don't sell D40s directly to end users.

But if you want to have that confirmed by Nikon, you can ask a local camera dealer there in Texas to have the Texas Nikon sales rep call you. If you don't trust the camera dealers, you could call the switchboard at Nikon in Melville, NY (631-547-4200) and ask for the sales department. When connected (you'll get a sales department secretary or admin, probably) explain what you're hoping to accomplish. They'll probably tell you right then that only dealers can buy D40s, but if necessary they can put you in touch sales rep for Texas or the regional sales manager who supervises all the sales reps in the south/southwest (probably by promising to have them call you). But they'll also explain that only dealers can buy D40s from Nikon USA.

Using this method, customers sometimes got a hold of me when I was the Nikon sales rep for northern California, so I know it can work.

By contacting Nikon, he should be able to discuss his needs & find what his alternatives are (all possibilities), through direct discussion with Nikon, :-)

Generally dealing with Nikon direct has firm contracts with their retailers they ( Nikon ) is forbidden to sell below suggested retail. So a Mom and pop shop can place a "special order" with their area rep, Granted the Mom and Pop shop won't have them in stock, but arrangements can be made for special handling. The Mom and Pop will be happy to have a smaller markup, where the big guy doesn't care, because he sell thatt many cameras in a week any way.

Often time Nikon will also dictate what retailers sell their product for, that's why you see authorized resellers selling "DEMO" models. These are not DEMO models, they are often times NEW cameras that the clerk just clicked away till it reached enough actuations to be consider "used". See nikon won't let the dealer sell cameras below a certain price level, so as to keep the field level for all retailers. If a HUGE retailers gets a better price because he buys 1000 units, he can sell them cheaper to the consumer - the price cap stops that practice, BUT the "DEMO" is the way around price caps, because it is no longer a NEW camera.

One camera store in particular on E-bay is good at this "work around"

Here's some more Nikon info & yes, it appears you need to go through an authorized Nikon Dealer for purchases of the DSLRs--- but, with first 3 numbers of your zip code, they are easy to locate, :-)
